    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role focused on supporting two DreamWorks teams, television distribution and channels. Daily tasks often included performance tracking of DreamWorks shows, deep dives into different markets, and the collation of data into interactive Power Bi reports. Furthermore, we were the first port-of-call for any data into the kids and family global market. Additionally, we aimed to produce frequent long-term presentations into new market trends including the introduction of ad-tier streaming, the rise of FAST channels in the kids' space, and the growth of Preschool content.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • The primary skills that I have improved would be: - Excel - A primary application that's often used to provide insightful graphs and charts alongside using a variety of formulas. - Power Bi and power Query - focused on building an insightful and interactive report that draws global Netflix data together into one document. - Research specific programmes - Techedge, ITVR, Fusion, Plum, Ampere, ARMR, Digital-I Other soft skills include; Presentating, creating insightful and appealing powerpoints, time managment, organisation, and the handling of big data.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • My boss was great at providing work that could benefit my career development. She made sure to consistently enquire about what I was looking to improve and devolve relevant work. I have always been able to ask for help and support from my boss and the wider research team. My level of responsibility has equally grown throughout the placement, and I have been able to take a more central role in dealing with the requests from the channels team.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My boss and wider team have always been available to provide support in a way that allows me to learn and develop. Having the previous placement student during my opening month also allowed me to gain much needed support when learning new programmes. The strategy that my boss used to introduce different programmes throughout the opening 3 months and not bombard me with them allowed me to gain confidence while not feeling overwhelmed with new information.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company has a really positive atmosphere that prioritises a work-life balance. I have been able to have conversations with a variety of employees both junior and senior management, with everyone happy to provide advice and support. Getting involved in corporate social responsibility is encouraged, with ERG's like Out and Ben holding events throughout the year, and the yearly cares day to give back to local communities around London. The early talent acquisition team have equally been incredibly helpful, providing lots of Networking events and Intern Huddles to integrate us into the company.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement, with a supportive and kind team, and work that I enjoy. I have been incredibly impressed by the opportunities that Interns are provided, with frequent screenings, presentations and events all offered. I've equally been very lucky to get such a kind and supportive boss that has allowed me to get stuck in, develop my skills and speak to people across the business. It is certainly a role and a company that I would like to come back to.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to NBCUniversal
  • For placement students, make sure to demonstrate that you enjoy film throughout the application and interview process. Early Talent acquisition and your potentials managers will want candidates that are excited about working for a media company. Focus on being honest, you don't need to have amazing excel skills for the placement but show that you have a willingness to learn. Lastly, try to keep a basic understanding of the media market, NBCUniversal role within it and their upcoming content.
