    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role supports both the controllership and FP&A processes of Universal Pictures Int'l. In FP&A, I support the team by compiling and presenting reports based on our in-release and future film titles. In controllership, I assist by helping to prepare month-end reports and supporting other, non-finance, departments to process their payments. Additionally, I carry out weekly tasks such as forecasting our weekly cash forecast and making sure the EMEA pack matches the Box office predictions of our head office.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt plenty of new skills, including but not limited to: - Excel - though i had learnt the basics of this in my university course, the practical use of Excel in the workplace has allowed me to improve my use of advanced formulas and pivot tables. - SAP - I had never used this application before but use it everyday and now feel comfortable offering to assist with Ad-hoc tasks that include this platform. Other skills include: presentation skills, communication, time management, and organisation.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I have been given plenty of responsibility during my internship. This has been especially evident when my manager allows me to assist colleagues from the marketing departments with their purchasing issues. This has included all colleagues, from intern level to director level. I have also been given the responsibility of preparing the pack that is presented bi-weekly to the team and presenting it on my own. This is checked over by the team afterwards but is often trusted with me.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • i have been incredibly supported during the internship, but in work and in my personal life. Universal are very accommodating when it comes to needing to work from home for personal issues, in addition to the 2 days working from home you get per week. My manager has supported me with weekly catch-ups where she checks in to see how I'm doing, generally and with work. Moreover, the entire Universal Pictures team are incredibly supportive and will happily speak to you about your career goals, no matter their department or title.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture in NBCUniversal is incredible! Company wide, employees are supported by NRG groups which allow minority groups to come together and celebrate their culture with special work events - for instance, London Pride. Within my department, the general atmosphere is great and feels very family-like, and events such as birthdays etc. are very much celebrated on a weekly basis. Additionally, the intern cohort has been given lots of events to feel included and to get to know everybody to ensure we feel at home.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement! I would recommend it to anybody, both who are considering a career in film and those who aren't. I was not considering a career in film, but applied due to my love of the entertainment industry, and it has ignited a passion for the media industry for me. NBCUniversal is such a supportive company when it comes to the internship scheme and I have had an incredible social and work experience, equally.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to NBCUniversal
  • I would say to let your true colours shine in the interviews. They definitely prefer the people who show a bit more of themselves in the application process. From all the interns and colleagues that I have met, you can tell that NBC like to hire those who let their fun side show. Additionally, I would definitely not be disheartened by how long the application process is, as they do not contact in regards to your application until a few months down the line.
