    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Support the site with engineering tasks/actions, data analysis on critical assets reviewing unplanned downtime. Support the company with its sustainability goals/agenda, collect data on a weekly basis and present this to key stakeholders. Create mass/energy and water balances, support contractors with improving the sites efficiency e.g heat recovery, steam audits, metering audits etc.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Improved my communication skills from presenting my work to key stakeholders, gained confidence in working in industry. Improved my knowledge on utilities, chemical engineering principles. Enhanced my presenting skills, learnt how to use new software's such as minitab/power Bi.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Got to lead projects that were important to the business however this was quite late into the placement, depends on the students line manager. Lead key productivity and sustainability initiatives, since I was the only engineering placement student at the site I had more opportunity to work with other departments on different projects with lots of responsibility.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was
  • 5/5

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I don't think I got given the support I was expecting, I expected more support from my line manager/ the engineering leads/ people on site but had more support from people at different sites. Had to ask for guidance, didn't get much training from the site around my role however later on in the year training was put into place for certain areas I'd work on which helped. Would want more support/ guidance as I was just put into the role and expected to know everything

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 3/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • People are friendly, supportive and welcoming, care about the well being of others. However there's a difference to other sites, hearing the culture around R&D was very different to supply chain/manufacturing. They seem to have more social activities/ team work sessions compared to the manufacturing sites. Better work life balance/friendlier atmosphere.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed working on the sites sustainability agenda, I would've enjoyed it more had I got better guidance but I learnt a lot, gained new skills & knowledge. Happy with the projects I got given, would've liked more earlier on. Would have liked more organised events from the first gen team.
