    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My primary role at GSK is as a Pharmacokinetic (PK) Bioanalyst for preclinical and clinical ligand binding assay (LBA) development; during which I worked on a range of projects from routine analysis to the development of automated immunoassay workflows. Throughout my placement I utilised and developed my understanding of a broad range of technologies and techniques including Gyrolab immunoassays, ECHO automated liquid handing and Single Molecule Counting technology across a wide range of therapeutic areas.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During my placement at GSK I have developed a wide scope of skills including professional communication, effective collaboration, data presentation and strict time management; this was catalysed throughout my placement via developing experimental workflows, attending and presenting in team meetings, representing my group at site STEM events and attending internal and external networking sessions. Additionally I have learnt a variety of technical skills, specifically focused around the automation of Pharmacokinetic Immunoassays.

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Due to efficient training and support within my group (Biomarkers Immunogenicity and Bioanalysis) I have been able to take on individual and group responsibilities that are well integrated with the wider team. I have been given a comfortable amount of responsibility and freedom within the lab which is well coupled by support and mentoring throughout my placement.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • At the start of my placement all placement students went through an onboarding process which helped get us used to the company policies and began our training. This was then further developed upon throughout my placement by support and training directly within the group as well as guidance from the greater placement student organising body "IP Unite". Additionally, I had bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with my manager which provided guidance and support.

  • The values and culture are at the heart of the company so ensure you are familiar with these; don't be afraid to show passion for why you're applying. During the placement take advantage of all of the opportunities you're given, from networking with other departments to taking part in the STEM ambassador scheme - there are many things to get involved with outside of your own department that will aid your development.
