    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • In my role I work within the graduate recruitment team; we manage both our internship and our graduate recruitment. As an intern, I feel very trusted and have been given a lot of responsibility. I have opportunity to manage my own roles from start to finish as well as the opportunity to arrange and assist at recruitment events. Additionally, I have been given the opportunity to work with the wider recruitment team on other tasks.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Definitely, I could not name a skill which I haven't improved during my placement! Firstly, everyone says this... but I have greatly improved my Microsoft Office skills; Excel and Outlook especially. Additionally, doing recruitment I have had to converse/communicate with a wide range of people, including external candidates and hiring managers, my communication skills and confidence when speaking to people have definitely improved. I think this comes down to experience, which develops throughout.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • In this internship is you are given so much responsibility that you don't feel like an intern! In recruitment, I have been responsible for some of my own roles. Feeling totally trusted within my role has been really rewarding throughout the placement. One thing I would say is at the beginning, do not be disheartened if you are not given a lot of responsibility; you are just learning and it will come with time!

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My line manager and I have bi-weekly catch up meetings. But, when I am working at home or in the office we talk very regularly throughout the day anyways. I feel comfortable to ask any questions I need to. Also at Hilton, we have regular meetings with our intern supervisor to see how we are getting on; it is a great time to get together with the other interns and hear about everyone's experience.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Hilton is labelled as a Great Place to Work and has been for multiple years running. Since working here, it is obvious why. There is a big focus on community here which I love! In terms of atmosphere, everyone I have spoken to in the business is super friendly. Also, as an intern I haven't ever felt looked down on or treated lesser than, instead treated as important/valued, which has been really nice.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really could not have hoped for a better placement opportunity. I have felt trusted and valued throughout but also never afraid to ask for help or guidance from my other team members or manager. I feel I have not only learnt so much about recruitment, HR and Hilton but also the hospitality industry in general. Additionally, I have really enjoyed the social side of the internship and getting to know the other Hilton interns.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Hilton
  • I would ensure you try your best on every stage of selection, put in maximum effort as this will pay off. You will be recognised for your passion for hospitality and Hilton knowledge, research into the business really pays off; e,g, our Hilton Values. My main advice would be; just be yourself at every stage as recruiters want to see how you will fit in the team and in the company. And be positive!
