  • Gathered information from financial and broker reports regarding the past, ongoing and estimated future performance of companies Looked through industry reports and materials to form opinions on sectors and trends Used Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel to build out pitchbooks and materials for clients and meetings Developed an understanding of corporate finance, accounting and valuation methodologies Used financial data platforms to gather market data Researched prior transactions Various administrative tasks, including those that may pertain to live transactions or situations

  • Proficiency with data platforms: Capital IQ, Bloomberg, Mergermarket Microsoft Office skills: Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Word Corporate Finance, Accounting and Valuation Methodologies Knowledge about the current macroeconomic and deal environment; about previous transactions; understanding of companies and corporate structure and ongoings Appreciation of workflow processes within investment banking: namely, those related to the iteration of materials and processing of feedback Communication skills with bankers of varying seniority (from fellow interns and analysts, to managing directors) and occasionally clients

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Lots of responsibility: very much the case that they will give you as much responsibility as deserved, as long as you can show that you can handle the pressure Communicated on multiple occasions with and sent deliverables to various associates, vice presidents, executive directors and managing directors Was given the opportunity on various occasions to work with the numbers and models Had the chance to address feedback and comments on deliverables multiple times (though, at times, with greater degrees of guidance and direction)

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • As and when required: plenty of support and guidance available from various people - whether in a work context or more personal context - when requested upon Analysts and associates were always incredibly willing to provide help regarding tasks and give check-ups to make sure we were both coping and progressing well HR representatives and the recruitment team voiced on multiple occasions to reach out if we had any concerns, questions or queries Many of the above comments can also be made of our line managers and intern buddies

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Incredibly strong Very strong collaborative culture where people sought to seek help from and provide guidance to their teams - despite being a massive multinational investment bank Tight-knit atmosphere with many events and goings-on Very respective and inclusive culture - welcoming to all cultures, religions and sexual orientations, genders, backgrounds People were very nice and supportive, even during stressful, pressurised situations - atypical of the wider industry General atmosphere was incredibly positive - very energetic and welcoming especially to newcomers

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Incredibly enjoyed my placement. Had the opportunity to learn a lot - ranging from commercial awareness skills, industry knowledge, hard skills - such as finance and accounting, as well as data platforms and Microsoft skills - and soft skills - such as improving teamwork and communication skills Met various industry professionals who were very knowledgeable and inspiring - as well as being very encouraging and strong mentors Also met many like-minded students who were greatly supportive, friendly and a pleasure to work with

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Morgan Stanley
  • Apply early. Have a very good understanding of the job - either through research or prior internships Make sure to polish up your CV and Cover Letter before the applications open to ensure you have everything prepared. Fill out the online application properly. Study for the psychometric, numerical and reasoning tests - you need to score very high Prepare for the interviews and assessment centres: technical skills, commercial awareness and motivational questions Have a good understanding of Morgan Stanley in terms of culture, where it stands amongst other firms
