    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I developed my professional skills and was offered plenty of opportunity to learn to behave professionally in the office and beyond; I interacted with lots of seniors which developed my skills in networking and discussion; I developed my technical skills through LBO modelling and debt-specific valuation techniques; I learned from my mistakes in formatting, technical analysis, and communications; I developed my public speaking and presentation skills through the final intern project which was presented in front of the senior team.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Unfortunately, the debt markets were rather shut this summer so we got very limited exposure to active dealwork and tasks that are typical of the role. Many of us substituted this learning with more passive learning and coffee chats. I wish more opportunities for deal work were provided and that my team had better dealflow. We took on a lot of responsibility and direct exposure to execution, although simulated, through our intern final presentation / project.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Excellent systems of mentorship put in place by Citi, although they felt very artificial and forced at times. I prefered the informal mentorship that developed through informal encounters and coffee chats all throughout the program. People are very open to speaking to you and I appreciated that. Associates had a lot of free time so they could dedicate more time to assisting with our learning, but I have a feeling that is not case under normal market conditions.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • At Citi, the most surprising aspect was the weird intra-team and inter-team politics at play, which I experienced intensely even as an intern. Teams tried to poach incoming Analysts from one another, everyone was playing some sort of politics in every single interaction with you. It is not the best environment to develop in as an intern. There was a lot of competition between the interns and not in a motivating way. Citi's culture should be re-evaluated.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • A lot of fun, social events, opportunities to network and develop as a young professional. Unfortunately, a rather toxic environment that does not assist that growth early in your career. Limited opportunities for involvement in real deals reduced what I actually got out of the internship, unfortunately. Felt unfairly treated at times given unique rules made for interns (no work from home) and a very intense culture of facetime. Learned as much as possible but would not return for a long-term career.
