    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I've worked as a full-stack developer for a web app. The preferred way of working was on-site, usually the day started with a daily stand-up where we were setting our goals. Every two weeks we also had app demos where we could train our presentation skills and also project retros to discuss any good/bad things happening. Also lots of social activities and breaks during the day!

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've learnt a lot of things, without being too overwhelmed. On the technical side I've worked on features involving all of the layers of the app: front, back and db (it was fully written in TypeScript). The great thing was that I was put in situations where I've trained also my teamwork, client interaction and presentation skills.

  • How would you rate the training provided during your experience?

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • This was another strong point of the internship, that I've felt like any other member of the team, being treated as an equal, working on some tough features and choosing my approach, writing tickets if I was finding any bugs in the app, planning the presentation by ourselves and having somewhat of a freedom if I had a preference towards working on a particular layer of the app.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was
  • 5/5

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The people from the office which were assigned to the project with us, the interns, were always ready to help us whenever we were stuck on something. We were encouraged to ask any questions and discuss any ideas we had towards optimizing existing parts of the codebase.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • So, so friendly and warm. We had tons of fun, out-of-office activities, pool and table tennis championships. Every time when I was taking a break from coding, I could find someone in the chillout room to have a great conversation with!

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?

  • 7. Would you recommend Softwire to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Softwire
  • I'd say that you should apply quite early (as soon as the window for recruiting opens) as there are tons of applications given the company's size. Also don't stress too much with solving tons of interview problems on leetcode, as they value more the way you think and approach a problem and your general attitude (soft skills) rather than knowing by heart BST algos, dynamic programming or 10 ways of sorting an array.
