Overview
Providing aerodynamics and propulsion perspective as part of an interdisciplinary agile project. Day to day involves carrying out CFD analysis which includes geometry preparation, running and processing the results, with feedback to other department representatives and input on decision making as part of the project.
Skills
Developed skills in computational engineering, building on knowledge gained from university course and applying skills to a real world problem. Learned software tools and methods in use within the department to carry out analyses, as well as strengthening programming and data analysis skills with presentation of data and technical information also.
Responsibilities
Yes, with support available as and when required. I felt I was steering my work and receiving appropriate guidance as to the direction I should head in, but was left to carry out and progress the project work independently, which I greatly appreciated.
Support & Guidance
More than sufficient when requested, not just from designated colleagues (supervisor buddy etc.) but anyone in the department who was keen and interested to help in the work I was carrying out.
Culture
The company culture was sufficient, with some inter department events hosted that I was able to attend. There was regular visibility on charity events and initiatives as well as the employee support networks available. Myself and the interns arranged some socials between us but this was not via the company itself.
Your Impressions
Really enjoyed my time at MBDA particularly due to the level of technical work I carried out and the structure and business context presented by the project. My colleagues within the aerodynamics department were great, always up for discussing work and being interested in the project that was ongoing.
Yes
MBDA has a lot to offer! With a lot of variety between functions and departments I would recommend to apply to several placements to see what you might be interested in, and don't put all your eggs in one basket - there is the chance to transfer or do an external placement in a different department down the line. Also prepare well for technical interviews if you are applying to an engineering function!
