    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was working on a computational model within the EO Sensors department. On a day-to-day basis this was all MATLAB coding. The placement started with getting an understanding of the problem that needs solving, then designing code, implementing the code, testing, improvements, writing a full report alongside other design records, and ending with a presentation to the department.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Surprisingly, one of the main skills gained was related to software engineering, simply due to the nature of the specific placement.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, in the sense that I was asked to develop a model that definitely needed to be built and (ideally) built soon. When I needed help there was always help available. The pressure was not too high because the work was not for any specific upcoming project with tight deadlines.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Plenty :) Whenever I needed help, the team lead or the technical expert would be at hand - either in person or via Skype. If they were busy I was simply able to schedule a call / meeting. The team lead checked up on me twice a week in addition to the weekly Friday catch ups. The technical expert was fantastic, spending hours going through the physics and programming involved if need be.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very nice atmosphere, the entire department were very friendly and easy to get along with. They took an interest in my development and helped me feel at home. Every Thursday there was a pub lunch tradition, and there was 'casual Fridays'. The dynamic working meant we could arrive earlier or later in the day and leave earlier or later.
