    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked in a DevOps team as a developer. This job mostly required Python development for a data pipeline in Apache NiFi. In addition it was imperative to be able to present the product to internal stake holders in addition of creating documentation. A day in a DevOps team will start with a morning stand up to discuss what has been done since yesterday, what will you be doing today and if there are any blockers. The remainder of the day will consist of meeting with individual team mates to discuss code and future developments. Finally, developing your code will consume the remaining time available.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Mostly working with an Agile framework, this is very common in the tech industry and essential if you want to succeed in a development team. Being able to sale you product to internal stake holders is a fundamental skill, as its not only about creating a good product but also being able to sell its benefits. Things like having a hook to captivating your audience and having a clear message. Knowing how your product affects the business, this is essential to be now what changes have to be made to a product and understanding how it will benefit the overall business. Finally, all the technical knowledge, such as, Python, Groovy, NiFi, Splunk...

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • During my internship I was allowed to present my product to a large group of people (Over 100) which included VPs and ED. This shows the amount of responsibilities an intern can be given at Morgan Stanley. In addition the product I developed during my internship is currently in product and having a real impact in the day to day of the business. When designing my product I was allowed to choose specific requirements that I though of and was by no means only restricted to the requirements set by my manager. If i though something should be included I would be able to added and present the knew feature to my manager for approval. In essence my internship had no micromanagement, and had room to implement my own ideas. For sure I was given much more responsibility than expected.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My manager was always supportive and ready to hear any concerns I might have. He always considered my ideas and would have weekly meeting with him. My internship enabled me to be very close to my manager. HR was always supportive and heard any improvements that we thought could be made. I had 3 meetings during my internship with HR where I could address any concerns or improvements that should be made. They where fast and effective when taking decisions and could not ask form more from them.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company has a great culture, I specially enjoyed the Global Volunteering month where we were given the opportunity to help in a children's hospital. This was not only a chance of helping others, but also to create a better team atmosphere. In addition, team events are common which reinforce communication and relationships within a team. Clubs are also available to support diversity and inclusion. This is a great opportunity to network. The company promotes a winning culture that pushes everyone to there best selves. Its an environment where smart and hard working people thrive in.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Overall, it was great experience. Most importantly I got a taste of everything, developing software, presenting, networking etc.. Interns are given opportunities to thrive and showcase there talent in every field. This is something that other companies can not relate. At Morgan Stanley its not only important to be a good developer but also to be able to sell and showcase a product which is something that is overshadowed at other places. An internship at Morgan Stanley gives you the chance to do both, and make you a more rounded and complete person. Its a great experience that I would recommend to any ambitious developer.

  • 7. Would you recommend Morgan Stanley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Morgan Stanley
  • My biggest recommendation is not to be shy and ask questions. If you have tried something and you are not able to fix it talk with your manager, he has much more experience and probably know what's going on. Before talking to your manager make sure that you make a list of what you have tried and why you think the program or script is not working. This showcases that you have tried and will save time to your manager, as well as, critical thinking and knowing when to ask for help.
