    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As an intern, your role is primarily to help the analysts and associates with tasks on their projects. I was given plenty of responsibility, with my slides being reviewed by MDs and used in their client presentations. Day to day, I would typically be doing profiles which give an overview of a company, joining calls where we would review the slides we had created, and using programmes and formulas within excel to gather financial information and present this using nice formatting

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a huge amount across the internship. Before we started in the office, we had training with an external provider where we went through general finance background information, and excel and powerpoint shortcuts. The tasks given to me improved both my powerpoint and excel skills/speed since I was using them daily. Also, my daily tasked improved my financial awareness enormously. By frequently looking through company data, financial statements and reviewing valuation multiples, you gain an understanding of what the figures mean

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a significant degree of responsibility. I was typically working on important slides that were being used in presentations to clients and my work was being reviewed by MDs, with an analysts review first. There is a lot of responsibility given to interns, with analysts trusting that the information I had added to the slides was correct, and not reviewing it in detail before sending it to senior employees. Often, I was working directly with Directors, sending my work to them without any prior review from a less senior employee which was a big responsibility.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Prior to starting working in the office, we had a week of training on both our soft and hard skills to prepare us for the internship. This included sessions on professionalism, communication styles and technical training. Also, wihtin our teams each intern was assigned a buddy (an analyst) to support them during their time in the office. Our buddies were really helpful with offering advice, especially as many of them and other analysts within the TMT team had previously done the summer internship.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I genuinely found the culture surprisingly good, but I do feel it differs between teams. I was in the TMT team, and I found that everyone was very helpful, kind and considerate of the fact that us interns were new and unfamiliar with a lot. Rothschild & Co seems to offer many summer interns a place as a graduate analysts, so it helps that many people in the team have been at the company since they were also very young. While the hours are long, people are considerate of commitments you might have, and birthday occasions and such.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my internship. It is definitely a lot of work, and long hours, but I found that I adapted to it quite quickly. I also felt as though with the team culture in TMT and the type of companies we work with, each day was genuinely interesting and enjoyable, and did not feel like hours sat at a desk. I found that the support was great, and people were willing to sit down and explain things to us interns which definitely helped me feel more knowledgeable and able across the internship.

  • 7. Would you recommend Rothschild & Co to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Rothschild & Co
  • As Rothschild & Co retains its family focus, and its historic angle, I think its important to learn about this and consider how this differentiates them in comparison to other banks. Also, with R&Co being an independent bank, I would encourage you to consider what this means and why it is that you would like to work specifically at an independent bank. Lastly, I think its very important to reach out to previous interns and other people within the bank to get an understanding of who they're looking to hire.
