Overview
Sitting in on meetings, training to get to grips with software and defence industry, coding and researching topics to help the department and writing technical memos.
Skills
I have learnt how to use matlab, write technical memos rather than lab reports, learnt how to communicate with customers and how to work in a professional environment.
Responsibilities
Yes! Just the right amount. I was given a job that mattered to the company so I felt valued but had no pressures/stress as I was new to the industry. Was a great way to get to grips with the company and meet lots of new people whilst not being worried about going wrong and ruining my reputation due to being brand new!
Support & Guidance
I received as much as I wanted. If I needed more support I could easily reach out to make a meeting and get the help needed from a variety of people including managers, HR, early career programme runners, and even a graduate buddy who had done the exact same placement as me just a few years before.
Culture
Better than expected! Though it is very male dominated, which is usual for the engineering (or just STEM in general) world, everybody regardless of age, gender etc is treated and respected the same which was great to see and there are many groups to promote pride, gender equality, mental etc which everyone seems on board with. Everyone I spoke to regardless of hierarchy was happy to help which makes the company unique.
Your Impressions
Very enjoyed. If I found a job to difficult or too boring they were happy for me to talk to them about starting something more suitable.
Yes
At the interview they seem to be looking for someone friendly and able to hold conversations aswell as being smart. Speak to as many people as possible when you arrive and get networking - it can really make a difference.
