    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Contributed to the development of computer models for two missile programmes. Each day started with a status update for one of those projects, followed by self-managed work on two separate tasks. Most of the day was spent working in MATLAB, often collaborating with others around the office for help.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes - I’m much more proficient in software development processes, MATLAB, C, software libraries, and other technical concepts. Also improved understanding of how defence companies operate, the importance of security and audit trails. Improved presenting skills by speaking at a department meeting

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes - I was wholly responsible for two tasks, one of which was investigating a new capability, and the other involved making changes to a model which the team were excited to incorporate into their next delivery. I could see how my work contributed to the company.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was
  • 5/5

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Lots of support from the HR ECP team, and my department. Departments each have an early careers coordinator who does a great job of making sure interns, placements, and grads are all properly supported and trained

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 5/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Welcoming and keen to invite new starters, although relatively slow paced (partly due to the nature of working on classified projects). Generally keen to adapt and welcome the next generation of young engineers. Lots of experienced guys who’ve been there for decades, and lots of early careers students or recent graduates, but not much in-between

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?
  • 4/5

  • How would you rate the social opportunities?

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I loved it! I do just enjoy simulation and modelling, so found the huge models MBDA use particularly exciting, and it was cool to work on missiles and get to explore the site. Few other workplaces have a pile of missiles sitting in the car park…

  • 7. Would you recommend MBDA to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to MBDA
  • This seems like a great company for a long career, but be prepared for red tape and a slow security clearance process. Worth applying for though, and they’re amazing at supporting early careers students!
