    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The core placement is in the New Ways to Pay team and this involves research (competitor analysis) and attendance/contribution to regular team meetings, as well as assisting the team with testing an updated version of the banking app. Group work involves both project management for a fundraising task and, separately, coordinating a group presentation on ideas for how the bank can reduce its carbon footprint.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Certainly soft skills like teamwork, communication and time-management. Use of IT systems such as Microsoft Teams, Leankit, Skype, Zoom. Learning frameworks/methods for project management related to the 'Agile' approach, eg scrums, swarming, backlog.

  • An appropriate amount of responsibility - involving agency in relation to the tasks set, but without being overloaded with work that might be consequential if mistakes are made.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Lots of support. My direct manager would check-in frequently and was approachable. Other team members also assisted in my development. A mentor in the group project was useful. A general 'grad' buddy was on hand as well.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Culture is very supportive, friendly and relaxed. Work-life balance is valued. Naive questions are treated with respect. Input is encouraged in spite of limited knowledge and experience.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Thoroughly enjoyed it. The work side was very educational - lots of learning. Socially there were plenty of opportunities to spend time with other interns and sometimes non-intern colleagues.
