    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • On a day-to-day basis I provided software and hardware support to the various projects within my department. Also managed projects consisting of device development and data analytics. Collaborated with external companies and conducted studies for device testing. I also worked in the labs with the devices for testing and attended various meetings.

  • Throughout my placement I have developed both personal and professional skills such as presentations skills, communication skills, stakeholder management, etc. The placement team has provided me with great opportunities which have furthered my skillsets, such as presentation workshops, poster presentations, CV workshops, etc. I have also had the opportunity to network with various members through out the business. I have attended various training courses related to my field such as AI and Machine Learning.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • The placement has allowed me to lead projects and extend my skillsets. I was always treated as a permanent employee and never just as an intern. You are always surrounded by an environment where you can express your opinions and ideas which are always appreciated. I also went on various business trips within the country.

  • My manager was always encouraging me when it came to personal development and always provided me with support when required. I also had a mentor assigned to me who helped me better my presentation and networking skills.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • BAT has a very diverse and inclusive culture. There are various social activities being done around the business e.g., quizzes, Christmas parties, drinks after works, etc. Everyone is very approachable and always willing to help you.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed working at BAT especially within my team. I didn't really do a lot of work related to my degree but I have developed a lot as a person and the experience has also increased my interest in other fields as well. I would definitely recommend others to consider giving BAT a try.

  • 7. Would you recommend BAT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BAT
  • I would advice people to keep an open mind about BAT when answering questions. Prepare a few situational questions ahead of time. I was also asked about what I thought of people smoking, the questions were fairly easy. You also need to do a basic online assessment which are math based and competency based. You will have to do a recorded interview then an interview with your potential line manager.
