    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My current role is in Investigations. On a day-to-day basis, I review Negative News alerts for existing clients. A review consists in analyzing the news and the clients answer, and then make a decision on the risk tolerance of the firm after consideration of all factors. My previous role was in ISG Advisory, where your responsibilities are to review risk reports for onboarding clients and make a final decision. In an advisory role, you will be contacted by other areas of the firm for guidance.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of valuable skills. Communication has been the main one: how to communicate efficiently and professionally, how to present effectively and write reports that will be used firmwide. I have also learned how to manage my time efficiently, as you have to balance your networking sessions, senior speaker seminars, and your own individual work. In terms of financial crimes, I have learned a lot on Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing with the help of internal and external policies, documents, previous cases...

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • To my surprise, we were given a lot of responsibility during our placement. Your voice feels heard and you truly feel as though you are a team-member, doing valuable work for the firm. In investigations, I had my own cases to investigate and present. In advisory, I was able to escalate some matters that were overlooked upon, or at least enquire about it and get an explanation as to why things are the way that they are. You are a team member and you truly get a sense of what it would be like working here full-time.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • We received a lot of support. You have you own buddy, your team manager, your team colleagues, your floor manager, and also a HR contact. In the UK, the GFC team is divided between Glasgow and London, meaning that there is a chance that your manager is located in London. During busy periods, this division was a bit challenging but it only took reaching out to the team colleagues based in your location to get the support needed.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture and general atmosphere is great. We had a lot of events within interns and team members, inside and outside the firm. There is also a firmwide online page for employees to share more about themselves, their culture, their pets, and even some pictures challenges. I felt involved in the company culture and was always encouraged to share about my culture and backgrounds. Everyone is reachable and open to grab a coffee with you, no matter their senior level.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really had a great time during my internship. I learned a lot, met a lot of people, and also learned more about the office life. I came in with not many expectations and left with an exact idea of what happens behind the Global Financial Crimes doors. I was able to ask advice from senior members during the speaker series that will be valuable for my entire career. This internship has also given me key knowledge that will be useful for completing my university course and hopefully pursue a career in financial crimes.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Morgan Stanley
  • Be yourself and don't compare yourself to others. Everyone here is smart and different in their own way, which is exactly why they will value you. The interview experience is challenging and takes a significant time, but it is important to keep pushing and believing in yourself. Also, networking before the internship is very good, make use of social medias. There is not so much preparation you can do other than studying the company itself. Just be enthusiastic and confident and if you are a right fit it will all work out!
