    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role as Summer Analyst is to support my allocated team within GFC. In my day to day basis, this involves attending trainings, team meetings and the completion of projects. The characteristic of this projects varies, as they depend of the GFC team. For my case, this have been Program Framework and MSIM Advisory. In the first one the project relates to global policies and procedures as well as local legislation, whereas the second relates to the the advisory of Investment Management as a business unit.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my communication and interpersonal skills. Being set in the office, attending numerous meetings and networking with my department and other areas of the firm has allowed me to boost my communication skills in a business environment. Additionally, I have developed my time management and problem solving skills. As this is a fast-paced environment, it is essential to focus on the most important areas in order to solve problems in an effective manner.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Although my role was only of a Summer Analyst, I felt like I was given a considerable amount of responsibility and trust into my projects. I always felt like my concerns regarding my work were taken seriously, and people around me (team members and others) were really supportive. This responsibility not only includes the content of my work, but also the access to senior managers (for networking and learning purposes) and to firm resources (such as data bases).

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is characterized for being really open and transparent. As mentioned previously, everyone is really supportive and there are great resources available for employees. Particularly for new employees and interns, I think they really put an emphasis on new talent and on learning. I always felt like I could ask any question or speak up when I did not understand something. Additionally, this is not only applicable to employees, but also to senior managers, inclusive to other regions and countries where MS is present.

  • My advice to anyone applying to Morgan Stanley is to be yourself and show your interests. It is very important to show that you have the right skills to the job, and linking it to your interest and experiences is a great way to do that. For example, communication or team work skills can come from a variety of backgrounds (university, sport teams, work experience), and are key sills to show when applying to Morgan Stanley.
