    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The possible roles for a Finance Summer Analyst varies massively and you may get put in a role that differs from the role that I have worked. However, my role involved working closely with key stakeholders and different teams and departments to deliver regulatory and internal filing requirements to both a very high standard and on time. This role was critical within the finance department and you will always be able to see the value that you are bringing.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During my time in this role, I have learned to use software that is specific to my team and department that has enabled me to quickly and efficiently perform my function. Additionally, I have had an opportunity to hugely improve my Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills. Excel is critical to success within the Finance department and the team are very understanding and helpful when assigning tasks that require the use of these software packages. On top of this, I have had a great opportunity to develop soft skills such as presentation skills and also communication skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • From day one it was very obvious that I would not just be given tasks that were engineered for the sake of giving me tasks. I was very much getting stuck in with the team and responsibility was given freely. You are also given total control to manage your own time and deadlines. Whilst this may seem daunting to a lot of people who are new to this style of working, the team is very supportive and understanding and open communication is encouraged.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • During my internship I was given many different avenues through which I could see out support. Whether this be your manager, HR or even another member of staff within your team. Everybody is there to help and they make this abundantly clear from day one. This openness and availability of help means that you are not afraid to speak up whenever assistance is needed. I have never once felt as though I am not being supported.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • From day one it is made very clear that the firm is very proud of the culture that they have created and the atmosphere of the office. Whilst many firms say this, this firm truly lives and breathes what it says. It is obvious that the culture is one of openness and acceptance and collaboration. That also feeds into all of the other positive aspects of the internship, such as being supported when needed by your colleagues.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have enjoyed every minute of my internship and there hasn't been a single moment where I have regretted joining or felt overwhelmed. The work has been sufficiently incremental that a knowledge base is built first and then built upon. The staff are all very keen to help and speak to you, even staff outside of your team/department. Overall you get a very well rounded picture of the firm if you look for it.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Morgan Stanley
  • The advice that I would give to others when applying is to not get too caught up in the fine details of your work experience. Of course this is going to matter, but what matters much more is your attitude, your outlook and you as a person. One thing I have noticed is that the firm really values their culture, and part of curating that culture is finding the right people during the application process that don't just tick a box for technical knowledge, but are also an amazing and enthusiastic individual.
