Overview
My role was to undertake basic accountancy tasks, usually working with spreadsheets, to contribute to my team's audit of a particular client. Usually this involved cross referencing transactions and collating information into an overall document. I was also expected to use my time to get to know the company and the professional services industry, and the people I worked with gave me excellent advice and insights.
Skills
Yes, I have learned the basics of the accounting software used by PwC as well as developed an appreciation for audit processes and procedures. The internship also allowed me to hone my interpersonal and business skills by participating in team meetings on a daily basis as well as working on a separate social enterprise project with other summer interns.
Responsibilities
I was given responsibility to undertake basic tasks which did not require much accounting knowledge. However, these still contributed to the audit of the client and therefore I was expected to ask questions to ensure the work was thorough and correct. It was my responsibility to manage my time and communicate with the team on my progress.
Support & Guidance
I was allocated a buddy for more informal questions and discussion. They were really helpful in my first week to help me settle in and find out more about working life at PwC. In addition I had a 'career coach' who was a little more formal to ensure my development goals were met and that I was being given adequate work.
Culture
Great culture and atmosphere. Everyone was very friendly and keen to give me advice and chat to me about their career. I integrated seamlessly into my client team and the atmosphere and culture played a key role in this smooth transition.
Your Impressions
Overall I really enjoyed the experience. From a work shadowing perspective, it couldn't have been much better. The culture and environment exceeded expectations. The induction week was chaotic and intense, but once I had done the onboarding and initial training everything was very enjoyable. The 3 weeks of client work were the highlight.
Yes
Make sure you are clear on the career path and are passionate about the professional services industry. Have an interest in sustainability and the future of technology. Ensure you understand and align with their values and the 'PwC professional' standards. Put on a smile, be friendly and just be yourself in the interview process.
