    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Sitting in on meetings with stakeholders and developers, taking notes and asking questions. Reaching out to more senior members of the team and learning from their expertise. Completing a document as part of a larger piece of work towards a long-standing project. Designing an automated process to help alleviate the mundane tasks of other members of the team

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Improved my networking abilities. Used my own initiative and learnt SQL in my free-time at work. Been introduced to using Visio.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Not really - the team I was placed in did not have many tasks suitable for an intern, other tasks were too advanced and required lots of background knowledge which an intern could not be expected to master in 8 weeks. I was given my own document to take 'ownership' over and produce but this was supervised and overseen by a more senior member of staff.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A lot of support - all members of staff who I interacted with were more than happy to set aside 30mins for an informal chat or offer assistance with any work queries.

  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture and atmosphere was great. Good work life balance and relaxed office atmosphere. No one expected you to work overtime and you were trusted by your colleagues to get on with your own work at your own pace, rather than be driven by strict deadlines or people watching over your shoulder

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed the experience of working within a large corporation and the insight this provided. At times, I did not feel intellectually stimulated and was often idle - this was not without me offering assistance to other colleagues/teams. It did not meet all my expectations, I expected to learn more new skills and make more of an impact during my time here. I was disappointed to find there were no intern socials to help us meet one another - particularly saddening for those that relocated and were new to the area. That being said, the people and culture was second to none.

  • 7. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Barclays
  • Once you have your foot in the door, it is very easy to move departments internally so don't be afraid of applying for a role that you don't necessarily want to do forever. Preparing for starting your internship - relax, the first week is hectic and not very well structured as they are onboarding 800+ interns, so don't worry if you don't know what you're doing straightaway. Ask as many questions as possible and reach out to whoever - use it as an opportunity to find out more about roles you are interested in
