    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Everyday is different in this technical role. The best part of the role is visiting the supply base, depending on which category you are in this is either factories or farms. You will have regular communications with suppliers and internal Product development & Commercial colleagues. Using technical systems to keep product specifications up to date and also some project work aswell.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • This placement has massively increased my confidence and awareness of how retail works. It has given me a great understanding of manufacturing processes, HACCP and compliance. Also the processes new products go through to make it to market.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was allowed to technically manage my own category from quite early on. This allowed me to learn on the job and manage my own products and relationships with suppliers. I was also allowed to attend site visits on my own later on in the year, this was great for my own personal development.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Everyone within the technical team at Co-op was willing to help. With it being hybrid working, everyone was either sat together in the office or just a teams call away. The working atmosphere was very supportive.

  • A great working atmosphere. Everyone within the team is friendly and supportive and want to make sure you have a good year.

  • I loved my placement year, I was given so many opportunities to develop professionally and as a person. I learnt so much about the food industry and the jobs within it.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to The Co-op
  • Showing a passion for food and interest in the role is essential. The interview process isn't too stressful, pay attention to the Co-op behaviours as these form a big part of the recruitment process. Co-op don't offer grad schemes in this area, I believe this is a good thing as it has encouraged me to work within the supply base to broaden my experience.
