    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I work both independently and with other members of the department to analyze samples taken from a variety of animal models of disease. I use a variety of scientific assays to identify biomarkers within this models, and how treatment with compounds may regulate this. Alongside this, I use a series of programmes to analyze my data, and present them in group meetings or study summaries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Throughout my placement, I have developed a wide range of skills. These range from personal skills, such as a build of confidence, ability to communicate and present, in addition to developing my knowledge of machinery and equipment around the lab, knowledge of assay techniques and the scientific background behind each experiment. I have been able to develop my analysis skills, in addition to my literature skills presenting mostly in my end of year report.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I have always been given a fair level of responsibility, being trusted to analyze real samples and compounds for important studies, in addition to running experiments for others within the department. Towards the end of my placement, this responsibility has increase, as I am no trusted to go and run experiments on my own.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a huge amount of support throughout my placement. My department have been so welcoming and reassuring, and my supervisor especially has dedicated a lot of time to work with me closely, and ensure I have the best all round knowledge of the work i'm doing whilst ensuring I have the most enjoyable time whilst I am at GSK.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company has been exceptional for this, providing charity events, social events, on-site diversity activities and more. Everybody at GSK is so inclusive, and the company have done an incredible job at bringing everybody together, with constant activities and events to celebrate the work we all do.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on placement. It has provided me with the laboratory experience I desired since beginning my degree, but helped develop me in so many more areas. I have met so many lovely people, and learned so many valuable skills that I will carry with me through to my future career.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
  • Be yourself. Dedication and hard work is key, but you must also have an understanding of how to work well with others. GSK is a team, in which you are a player. Your department is like your family and it is imperative that you can fit in well with your colleagues to make your time at GSK most pleasurable.
