    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Daily tasks include cell culture passaging and sampling, freezing or reviving cell banks, inoculating bioreactors. All data generated from experiment needs to be recorded in electronic lab notebooks and experiments need to be written up. Attend numerous multidisciplinary department meeting, team meetings or 1-2-1 managerial meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Learnt cell culture and biopharm processes from scratch essentially, as well as built upon existing data science/analysis skills, such as data mining, data cleaning and statistical computing to generate data visualizations and statistical reports. Communication skills became more developed, as well as time management.

  • I was given responsibility to carry out my own research independently, with the supervision of my line manager for technology development work. Not authorised to underatake project specific work.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I receive support from my line manager and the team I work in. I also had a pastoral supervisor that would check I was doing okay in a more personal way. The rest of the department was supportive as well of my work.

  • The company is very proactive and relaxed compared to previous employers, however this depends on your business area / department. Everyone is really friendly and there are events / social groups as well.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
  • Ensure that you read the job description careful to align your skills to those required. GSK promotes the employment of people with good data management and analysis skills, so any sort of data analysis or programming software you can use would be good to include. Time management and strong presentation skills are important. An interest in latest industry news and development would be advantageous.
