    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role involved creating communications plans for charitable programmes that we are running, this can mean creating photo assets or video assets through animations. I also arrange/ support the arranging of events at GSK- such as the flagship programme the GSK IMPACT Awards, where I create materials for the event, liaise with external partners to arrange guestlists, food etc. Additionally, I advertise opportunities for employees such as volunteering and corporate membership events.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Personally, I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement. I was told at the beginning that the placement student is a fully developed role in the team and the team could not function without the placement student. This is definitely true, I was given projects where I was the leader and I had people reporting to me- additionally, in a lot of projects I was creating most of the content.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The system of the placement means you have 2 weeks of training with the former IP student where you receive a lot of hands on guidance. Then you are left to man the role on your own, however, your team are always there to help if you need support. However, I found the best way to learn throughout the placement was to throw yourself into the deep end and problem solve.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture of the company is very inclusive and supportive. The company does a lot to try and make you feel included as a placement student, with an IP governed body arranging activities for the placement students, team building days/ volunteering days and a wide range of opportunities for GSK placement students to get involved in.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement at GSK, the company creates a very inclusive and comfortable work environment. I got along really well with my team, and they became good friends, and I enjoyed the work that I did. My placement felt as though it had a purpose due to the nature of the work and the amount of responsibility I had, helping me with my soft skills and happiness in my placement.

  • 7. Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
  • I would advise that applicants learn about the culture and ethics of GSK as this is very important during the recruitment process. During the assessment center applicants should be confident and chatty, as teams are looking for someone to fit in with their dynamic as well as your skills. Also, be open minded, the opportunities at GSK are very expansive, so do not set your mind on a role and disregard others.
