    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a Technology Summer Analyst, I developed a software testing tool using Java Spring Boot and Angular. Every day, I had stand-up meetings with my mentor and manager in which I presented my work achievements, asked for feedback, and received advice on how to proceed and improve my product. During the internship, I also had the opportunity to work with a team of fellow analysts to code an AI agent to compete in the game of Ultimate Tic Tac Toe. Other fun events included hearing from the CEO of Morgan Stanley and other executives within the company, as well as participating in the company's Mapathon to help develop open-source maps of the globe.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learned how to use many different tools and skills during this internship, which ranged from proprietary tools to well-known technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, Angular, and Java Spring Boot. My manager and mentor supported my development, and career development programs like Pluralsight and LinkedIn Learning provided useful courses which I used to further those skills. Along with these technical skills, my communication and teamworking skills also improved throughout the internship, as a side effect of working as a member of a global team.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • This internship provided me with an adequate level of responsibility, without exposing me to all of the pressure of developing a tool for use by external customers. I was able to fully manage my own project, for the most part, and I learned about existing technologies within the Firm as my tool was designed to interact with other systems. The project taught me plenty about the internal business and software development within the Morgan Stanley environment.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The support and guidance I received from my manager and mentor was astounding. Every day, they took anywhere from half an hour to an hour plus to talk over how my project was going and help me work through and roadblocks I encountered. They provided me with resources to learn and gave me feedback on how to further develop my skills. They were also very approachable and seemed happy to have me on their team.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • As my internship was fully virtual, it was a little hard to gauge what the company culture would have felt like in a normal time. With that said, the team I was working with was very friendly and sociable, and we met up for drinks multiple times during my 10-week internship. Morgan Stanley hosted many online social events for the interns and placement students, as well as arranged for us to participate in a volunteer initiative involving mapping underserved regions across the globe. The environment is definitely engaging, and in the pre-Covid era, I have heard that many leisure / sports clubs and other societies are available for employees.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I had an amazing internship at Morgan Stanley: I learned more than I could've imagined in the 10-week period, and met some wonderful people who I still talk to today. The company has a very supportive culture and almost everyone you meet will be willing to help you if you have questions or want to learn more. I went into the internship expecting that the finance industry would be rather dry and boring, but it turned out to be an engaging and friendly experience. I am planning on returning to the company in the future for a full-time role.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Morgan Stanley
  • Morgan Stanley's application process is quite involved, but don't be intimidated! You can prepare for the online psychometric tests by taking practice tests, but they're nothing to be worried about. If you pass this stage, you will then be asked to complete a phone interview with a recruiter, in which you discuss your CV and interest in the role. I'd say the hardest part of the application process is the assessment center—I had two technical interviews which involved some coding and problem solving, as well as a group assessment which aims to capture how well you work with others. I found that one to be quite intimidating, but it turned out alright! Don't stress about it, and try and meet some new people while you're there.
