    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I had a daily meeting with my manager as well as a stand up with the team, where we would discuss our progress and anything blocking us. I would work on my project which had requirements gathered from real customers. I was involved in the whole process of the project from requirement gathering all the way through to testing. There were also several intern events with speakers from across departments within the company which gave insight into the industry.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I had never used Angular before but became quite confident with it by the end. My coding definitely improved with regards to efficiency. I also learned a lot about finance and financial technology, which I knew almost nothing about before starting. I gave a presentation to both the customer and my team at the end of the placement, which improved my public speaking skills. Over the internship I gradually got better at asking for help when I needed it instead of struggling alone.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a real project that would be used by the company long after I finished my internship. This made me feel like I was valued and trusted with real work. I met with customers and presented my work to them at the end of the 10 weeks. It felt good to show my efforts and present it myself. I was also able to take part in a sprint retrospective to help improve the overall process.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Help was always available when I needed it. I had a buddy in my team who would be the first person I would turn to. My manager was happy to join a call with me if I got stuck on a particular issue and he guided me in a daily meeting as well. I could also ask other people on the team who had no connection to my project and they would still be more than happy to try and help me.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Culture was a huge part of the company. HR met with us multiple times throughout the program to make sure we were doing okay and were not working overtime. It was clear that employees were very important to Morgan Stanley and that they were highly valued. Everyone I spoke to was extremely friendly and always willing to help which made me feel comfortable and helped me realise that I could always ask for help and wouldn't be bothering anyone.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I genuinely loved my internship. The 10 weeks passed by very quickly. I liked the people I worked with and I would find myself wanting to continue to work into the evening because I was enjoying it. The interns all got along and we organised meet ups outside of work including a quiz. The events organised for the interns were fun and we all got to participate in an intern competition in teams which included all the interns across offices around the world.

  • 7. Would you recommend Morgan Stanley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Morgan Stanley
  • Don't worry if you feel you aren't experienced enough. Before my internship, I was constantly worried that I wouldn't be good enough to do a job in software. but I managed to complete my project well and got many compliments from my team, which has really boosted my confidence. Also don't feel you're bothering anyone by asking for help. It can be more difficult to ask when working remotely as there isn't anyone next to you that you can easily ask.
