    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • This was an online internship due to COVID. There was a busy schedule of events/activities, focusing upon insight events into each section within technology, and then supported by panels, Q&As and speed networking events with current employees within each section. Alongside we had opportunities to work within groups towards our final presentation project, as well as purely social events such as the online escape room at the end of one of the days.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I definitely learnt new skills during the paired programming Python workshop, where a current employee walked us through some simple Python problems. It was really interesting seeing how differently she, as well as other interns, approached different problems, as well as the insight she gave to how Morgan Stanley-syle code is defined.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • This was particularly helpful as there is such a range of different roles within banking technology. Some of the talks were very high level as they could not go into specifics as it would require industry level knowledge/understanding, but I think they did a good job at making it accessible (especially to the range of different degree programmes being studied), but also engaging.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • It became apparent that many of the people organising this insight program all knew eachother very well and bounced off eachother to create a really fun and friendly environment. I was able to ask specifically about LGBTQ+ employee networks, about which I was given a host of information about the network as well as different charities they have worked with recently in support.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed this insight. I was fortunate enough to also have another insight programme during the spring, and the comparison between Morgan Stanley and my other insight programme made it incredibly apparent how much I preferred MS in terms of culture.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Morgan Stanley
  • Having a fundamental level of knowledge to be able to pass the numerical and coding tests are necessary, but beyond this, simply being an approachable and engaging person is probably the most important as opposed to your specific commercial awareness.
