    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Very hands-on electrical circuit design. I worked a lot with some commercial sensors in a datalogging application - so lots of datasheet reading and writing driver files etc. Also built up a proof-of-concept rig for a multipurpose testing application - so lots of programmable PSUs, ADCs/DACs, SPI I2C communications and connections etc.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Learnt to use some new software for PCB design. Also did some surface mount soldering for the first time! Definitely developed existing skills when it came to working with and programming microcontrollers such as Arduino or the STM32 line

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Absolutely. There was of course guidance from mentors and team leads, but we certainly got the chance to do some hands-on and self-directed work, which I really appreciated. It meant the first few weeks were quite intense, but after you settle in the experience you gain from the environment is invaluable

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Had both a mentor and a buddy for both practical industry support as well as any non-work related issues. Listened to talks and presentations from senior engineers with the opportunity to ask questions about their roles which was great. Had some fantastic chats with the people organising the placement about career stuff which was brilliant.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture was good, people were very friendly. As it was the summer where things were moving a little bit back to normal with Covid there weren't huge amounts of people in the office so you miss a bit of that dynamic. However the general atmosphere was very good

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I found it an invaluable experience in terms of seeing what working in industry was actually like, and I'm really glad I did it. I learnt about a lot of intangible things which you gain from the workplace, as well as concrete soft and hard skills. Met some great people too!
