    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked on the full fibre rollout in the East and West midlands. My job was to assist with the commercial management side of the project. Visiting pre-site and sectional completion walk offs, measuring the civils and fibre work carried out by the build partners. This in turn can represent an accurate application for payment for each individual site. In addition to reviewing all CE's submitted on CEMAR.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Everyday at CityFibre is a new learning curve, as you are surrounded by professionals with vast experience within the industry. This re-shaped my communication and networking skills, as you want every day to count and become that new building block for the next challenge ahead.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Straight away I got involved in sectional completion walk offs in the East and West Midlands .Being on-site with the quantity surveyors and BAE's to review the build partners work, listing all the defects that need to be completed before we could distribute the X7 completion certificates. We also got the correct measures to then allow correct take-offs for the AFP. Reviewing CE's and subsequent quotations with QS's and build manager in Derby to allow additional time and cost to the program.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • From day one my line manager supported me with any questions I had, alongside the teams I met all across the Four different offices I worked at during my placement across the Midlands. I had regular meetings every week with my line manger alongside the extensive support with my work day in day out . Every co-worker in the offices would take pride in answering my questions and helping me out. Never once did I ever feel like I was just a "summer placement". But part of a family that was on the way to achieve a Full Fibre network across the UK. The networks I have built at CityFibre have fast-forwarded my career and will be my greatest asset after graduation and begin my path to achieve RICS Chartership as a Quantity Surveyor. I can't thank CityFibre enough for this opportunity and would do it all over again within a heartbeat.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone in the office treated you with respect and would all come together to back each other. No matter what, everyone was willing to explain something a co-worker didn't understand and give them further support. In the office we had a pizza day for the whole team for a well done for everyone's efforts. This bought everyone together to discuss life outside the office and help everyone to get to know each other better. It was always a part of CityFibre when I was there to reward everyone and commend them for their hard work, it never was ignored.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The professional growth and development from my internship catapulted me as an individual. Exposing me to vast amounts of commercial challenges CityFibre faces alongside learning the contractual processes under NEC3. After graduation I will defiantly seek graduate opportunities the company offers, due to the great time I've had here with the team. I would highly recommend anyone seeking a summer placement to apply at CityFibre, as it open the doors to so many opportunities in the future and gives you amazing exposure to the industry.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to CityFibre
  • Meet as many people as possible, ask as many questions as possible and be willing to learn something new every single day. If you show passion within what career path you're taking people will recognise that and it wont matter that you don't have years of experience under your belt.
