The Role
My job is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to do as a career. I give 9/10 as there are some dislikeable aspects, but I would expect this in most jobs.
MS has a friendly and helpful culture, and all colleagues are approachable. Humility is encouraged so there is no need to be embarassed to ask questions. Regularly we have social events such as Bowling, drinks, parties, dinner etc. People always take time out of their day to talk to you about something other than work. Colleagues are also not afraid to delegate important tasks.
Guidance and support is always available, however sometimes you have to seek guidance yourself when you feel that somebody should have provided it to you.
Working at MS requires you work long hours, and sometimes starts can be very early to have meetings with Asia, or finishes can be very late to have meetings with New York. However, sometimes you can have a quiet day and leave earlier than normal, and recently a new policy has been introduced where you can take a morning or afternoon off if you normally work longer hours. A typical day for me currently is 08.15 to 18:30, but on Thursdays I leave at 16:00.
During the placement I have been given responsibility of a project to produce an internal reporting system for Rates Derivative trade-data. I have been given a great deal of freedom to direct this project, making key strategic decisions and coordinating all stakeholders. Support has been given when needed, but usually I have run this project myself. I have also been given responsibility of creating testing for the Dodd-Frank SDR regulations.
Project management, technical and people skills I have developed should help me in all aspects of life, not just career or education.
The Company
People will regularly invite you to social events, and people will always take time to socialise with you during the day. Managers have often said that as long as you get your work done, you can spend your time how you like.
When I applied to MS I was hoping to work in a projects team. I was placed in such a role, so I have no complaints about the firms ability to position a candidate according to their education and skill set. The application process was thorough and efficient. I received feedback and an offer very quickly. The review process throughout the year is very helpful, setting goals and measuring performance against them. This has helped me to see my key areas for development.
There is a mandatory review process in place that helps you to set goals and measure performance through the year. There are also many chances to participate in IT classes, for example I learnt how to write Macros in Excel. The majority of training and development is informal. Colleagues will happily show you something new or answer your questions.

Not had a job offer yet but hoping to get one when September comes around!
The Culture
There are always social events to attend, with a social committee organising official events. There are also events organised by sport/social clubs.
Canary Wharf is expensive for everything. However, I lived at home and commuted. This saved a lot of money.
There are many bars, restaurants and clubs in the local area. Often there is a night out organised with colleagues.
Nights out, social events, sports clubs, bowling, go-karting, team lunches, dinner at a colleagues house. These are just a few of the opportunities.
