    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was working in Pharmaceutical Microbiology within Research and Development as part of the Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls Analytical department. My role was aligned to the development of non-sterile and sterile dosage forms for clinical and commercial supply. The role is highly practical based where I carried out a range of microbiological techniques to support the operation of the non-sterile secondary pilot plant and the development of new drugs. My main job purpose was to provide the appropriate microbiological support for product development and supply projects. This support has to be performed in accordance with applicable standards of current good manufacturing practice and safety. Some of my responsibilities included performing routine environmental monitoring for the pilot plant (i.e. water testing), performing routine microbiological assays to validate new and existing methods or procedures as well as providing technical support for team testing requirements (i.e. culture work and microbial identification procedures).

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have developed my networking skills, written communication (i.e. scientific reports, practical protocols/methods, scientific posters), public speaking, presenting scientific research findings and technical skills (i.e. microbiological techniques like microbial identification, microscopy, membrane filtration, environmental monitoring).

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was responsible for two projects that were included in the end-of-year objectives which is a big task because it highlighted the importance of my work in the overall reflection of the departments achievements. Both projects involved problem solving and validating a new method to help improve the current procedures followed. The results from these projects allowed me to improve business practices.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Everyday the whole team had accountability meetings which meant we would discuss what tasks we had to complete throughout the day and give us the opportunity to seek advice or help on certain tasks. On a fortnightly basis I had 1:1 check-ins with my supervisor who would guide me through any problems I had come across while working on my projects.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture is very diverse and inclusive regardless of whether you are permanent staff or a placement student. Your opinions and feedback is valued and sought after. The general atmosphere is fun and lively, with team members often going for group walks at lunch or going to the town to get lunch together. When I am not working there is the opportunity to meet up with other placement students for a catch-up.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • This placement was one of the best experiences I've had, not only did it reinforce what I want to do as a future microbiologist but it also opened my eyes to all the other areas in the pharmaceutical industry. This placement exceeded my expectations in terms of the level of responsibility and trust that I was given while working on my projects. The team were very inviting and made me feel part of the core team from the first day which enabled me to feel supported and comfortable to seek advice when needed.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
  • - Do your research into the company cultures and values whether that is for GSK or any company because liking where you work is just as important as salary, location and job prospects. - Be yourself from the beginning of the application process and know that if it doesn't work out, it is not a reflection of your capabilities and sometimes it comes down to personality and your fit into the team. - Your successes and achievements in the classroom are just as important as your extracurriculars . Your ability to have good grades is not the be all and end all; taking part in university societies, volunteering or having a part-time job are also great ways to showcase yourself. - The online tests are one part of the whole process, so try not to dwell on it but taking a few FREE practice assessments can't hurt.
