    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Management and execution of marketing across both offline and online media channels. This includes social media (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Pinterest), e-commerce (retailer website syndication), public relations, partnerships, audio, programmatic video, display and TV. Within my role there are many meetings and actions that need to be taken from them, marketing is a central function therefore I will liaise with many other functions of the business as well as external agencies in order to move projects forward.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have definitely built my confidence when leading meetings and projects, being able to take responsibility for work and be accountable for its current status. Communication has been a very important skill in my role, both through talking to people on calls as well as over email. I have learnt to make sure that I adapt my communication style depending on who I am talking to and ensuring a successful relationship is built from this.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. I was given a large amount of responsibility as the brand that I work on does not have a large team, therefore many tasks need to be completed with fewer resources. At the beginning of my placement this was daunting and somewhat overwhelming, however I was extremely grateful to receive these opportunities as it meant I was able to develop faster and get up to speed with my work. As I showed I was able to handle this responsibility, I was given more important tasks.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a great amount of support mainly from my line manager. This was extremely beneficial at the beginning of my placement in order to ensure that I knew what tasks I needed to be doing and also which were most important. I also set up many calls with people from other business areas who I continued to have calls with throughout my placement. This was helpful as many of them had also completed a placement within the business.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • For me, the company culture was second to none. I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to speak to many extremely friendly and open people from the business, and have been given the independence to manage my own workload without need from constant messages from my manager to check up on where I am at. There are also many initiatives throughout the business, both company and regional based, and I have enjoyed being part of the charity team within my business area.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have very much enjoyed my placement as it has allowed me to gain a great amount of experience within a large FMCG company and help me understand the operations, tasks and challenges that are faced that I would not have been able to effectively comprehend otherwise. The company culture has allowed me to develop both personally and professionally and take the lead in how I would like to work, which has been extremely valuable at such an early stage in my career.

  • 7. Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to GSK
  • Ensure you really live the values of the company and reflect these in how you act. It is important that you are able to bring your full-self to work, therefore if you are naturally aligned with the values of the company you will hugely benefit from the culture and ways of working. Depending on the role applied for, I would say it is more important to be aligned with these than it is to know about the company's current financial position, forecast, innovation, etc.
