    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship. Over this summer the internship was virtual. The people organising the training and activities went above what I expected to ensure we all enjoyed our internship and always had things to be doing. Working from home I never felt that I had nothing to do. Also everyone was very friendly and helpful. The culture at Morgan Stanley is amazing and the people embrace the culture. Overall I would recommend this internship and throughly enjoyed my time at Morgan Stanley.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • During my time at Morgan Stanley I spoke to a wide range of people in a variety of roles. I always felt welcomed and encouraged to ask questions. No one was unavailable for me to talk to even at senior levels. I was asked my opinion and how I would handle situations. This was a great opportunity to show my personality and problem solving skills. I felt that my opinion was valued and that people wanted to speak to me.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was supported by my manager and my team throughout my internship. I always had people to go to to ask questions and raise any concerns. Morgan Stanley also has a buddy system which I found helpful as it is someone outside of my immediate team that I could go to with questions or to ask for advice. I spoke regularly to my buddy and my manger as well as another member of my team throughout the internship which helped me stay connected while working from home.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • During the internship we were given a lot of training and talks which filled our day. This was a great way to learn and experience different parts of Morgan Stanley. I throughly enjoyed these and I was glad to have so many of these. There was also time left for us to manage our own schedule. This was helpful as it pushed me to contact people and explore areas I found interesting. It also allowed time to speak to my manager and buddy.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given responsibility over my own schedule and over my own career. This was a good amount of responsibility for me to have at this stage. It allowed me to decide what I wanted to learn more about and who I wanted to talk to. As the experience is virtual there was not much more responsibility I could be given. During my time at Morgan Stanley I found that within the company everyone is given control over their careers and this was reflected in the internship.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • At university I do finance and economics therefore the work I was undertaking was very relevant to my studies. I have learnt a lot about the finance industry that I had to learnt during my time at university. Also I think the attitude of those working at Morgan Stanley is something I will look to continue to utilise during my career. I also learnt practical information such as training on excel and regulatory training. I have also learnt about what skills are important in the industry therefore I know what skills to focus on in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Although I was not in the office the culture I experienced was amazing. The people I interacted with were very friendly and approachable. There were many opportunities to get involved in different activities and to meet new people. There were also organised socials where the interns both in the department and in the Glasgow office were able to meet virtually and undertake challenges. One of the socials this summer was a virtual escape room via zoom.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The people setting up the internship were amazing and organised every part of it so well. The first few days of the internship were done via zoom and we were given a lot of training. This was beneficial as it allowed us to get settled and become comfortable with working online which is a very different experience. When we went to our desks my manager was there to help me with any issue that arose.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Morgan Stanley was very invested in the internship. This year with COVID it would have been easy for them to cancel the internship however they continued it. This set the tone for the rest of the internship. I felt that the firm wanted me to do well. The people I spoke to during my internship seemed invested in helping me do well. Also I spoke to many people who previously undertook the internship and now work for Morgan Stanley in senior roles which showed me the value they place on the internship.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am currently waiting to hear back about the internship. However I feel the connections I made during my internship will be very beneficial in the future and will help my employability. I also believe that undertaking this internship will help improve my employability. As well as the skills and experiences I have had will help me in the future with similar roles. Also as I mentioned previously being in control of my own career is something I hope will help me in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As the internship was virtual I did not get to meet people face to face as interns in other years have. The virtual social activities were amazing. We were able to met over zoom and build connections which I did not think would be easy to do. Morgan Stanley was able to arrange many opportunities for the interns to get involved and meet a lot of people to build a network. The events were mainly optional which really facilitated meeting enthusiast people.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I live in Glasgow therefore there was no additional cost to me. Overall I feel that Glasgow has a variety of things to do and that it can be expensive or cheap based on what you decide to do. The restaurants in Glasgow vary in style and price therefore you can pick how much you want to spend. As there are a lot of students in Glasgow there are a lot of activities tailored to that.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Currently with COVID there is very limited night life. However normally there are many clubs, bars and restaurants to choose from. Glasgow is a big city therefore there are a variety of things to do. There are a lot of bars to choose from or there are other activities such as mini golf. In Glasgow there are many options. I personally was not able to go out with the other interns as there are restrictions in place.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We were able to get involved in volunteering and virtual socials. However due to the current restrictions we were not able to meet up outside of work in person. Outside of work the interns were able to take part in quizzes via zoom which we organised. This was heavily encouraged by Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley has a focus on building relationships and networks which definitely was reflected in the internship. This really helped make the experience especially as it was virtual.
