    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship with Morgan Stanley was extremely enjoyable. l really enjoyed learning about the role and meeting the different teams within the Glasgow office. As well as enjoying the day to day role Morgan Stanley arranged many opportunities to interact with other interns across the Glasgow, London and New York offices. I attended various networking events which included quizzes and escape rooms. This was a great chance to network more informally with other interns. Overall it was a very enjoyable internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely welcome by my colleagues across the firm, both in the Glasgow office and in offices across the globe. Everyone was so friendly and they were willing to answer any questions I had. I was encouraged to reach out to as many people as possible during my internship and everyone I contacted was more than happy to arrange a phone call or zoom call for a chat. This was something I really appreciated during my internship and I learned so much from my interactions with my colleagues. Morgan Stanley has an open door policy which makes very senior leaders accessible to anyone in the firm.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I felt extremely supported throughout my internship. Due to the strange circumstances of the internship, with the global pandemic happening, Morgan Stanley were extremely understanding and were great to deal with. The HR department are so friendly and helped me so much with any questions I had and they also kept me up to date with what was happening with the internship during the pandemic. I also had great support from my manager and team who were all very friendly and willing to answer any questions.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the internship being held virtually it had an impact on what we were able to do on a day to day basis. This however did not impact how busy I was from day one. My schedule was jam packed with zoom calls and training sessions. I was given numerous projects to work on, both with a team and also individually. I also had some time which was free where I was able to arrange my own calls with people which I reached out to.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Due to the internship being held virtually we had limited access to confidential information and so were unable to get involved in the day to day role. However I did feel like I had some responsibility over the numerous projects which I was assigned. As these were an important part of the internship there was a lot of responsibility placed on these tasks. In comparison to other years we definitely did not have the opportunity to have high levels of responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This internship taught me so much and will definitely help me as I return to my university studies. Morgan Stanley provided me with a huge amount of training relating to financial services and products. They also offered training on professional skills such as teamwork and presentation skills. There was a mix of online training using the Morgan Stanley training portal and also training over conference calls. We were also given quizzes to complete after the training sessions which helped to backup the knowledge we had learned.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a great atmosphere in the virtual office. Due to the virtual internship we did not have the chance to experience the full office experience. However, in all the interactions I had with the team I was apart of I got the impression that there would be a great office atmosphere. The team had a great dynamic, there was a huge amount of collaboration between members of the team and there was constant communication between everyone.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This internship was extremely well organized. Due to the global pandemic there were a lot of challenges that arose in terms of the logistics of running the internship virtually. However the entire internship was so well organized and put together. Our schedules were jam packed from day one and I never felt like I was sitting alone in my house. I was in constant contact with my colleagues and felt really supported throughout the entire thing.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Morgan Stanley put a huge amount of resources together to ensure the interns were developed and learnt a huge amount. I had access to the Morgan Stanley online training portal which I could use to develop my knowledge of processes, financial products and markets. As well as offering courses to develop understanding of presentation skills, time management and career development. I had a manager who spoke to me about developing goals for the internship which allowed me to focus on what I wanted to develop in particular.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Morgan Stanley seems like an amazing place to work. We learned so much about the opportunities to manage your career and the care which is taken by managers to ensure you reach your full potential. The opportunities to progress through the ranks seems very accessible and there is also a huge amount of mobility opportunities. As Morgan Stanley have offices across the globe opportunities arise to travel and relocate if this was something you really wanted.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Due to the global pandemic it made socializing extremely difficult. Morgan Stanley did encourage social events between the interns. We had numerous quiz nights and games nights which allowed us to bond as an intern class virtually. We also were encouraged to socialize with the teams we were apart of. Again we attended team events after work bourse which allowed us to interact in a more informal setting. We took part in virtual escape rooms and bingo which were fun ways to socialize in a virtual world.
