    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement at Morgan Stanley. I was given the opportunity to listen in to some key speaker sessions with employees high up in the company. I also took part in a company wide giving back event and had casual and networking events organised for us. I was also able to meet various people across my department and in my team. We were also given an individual project to work on during the internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone I met at the company was very friendly and welcoming. They were all happy to take the time to speak to me and was always mentioning how the culture in the company is very nice which I found to be true. After working on a task I was always given good and useful feedback on how I could improve. My colleagues were always happy to schedule another call if I felt I needed one to gain more information.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • During my internship, I had one manager and one buddy. Throughout the 7 weeks, I met with each of them at least once a week to talk about the past week and the tasks I have been working on and whether I needed any help with anything. If I had any questions or in need of advice, they were always happy to help, and occasionally scheduled a second call if needed. I had also met everyone in my team so I knew who else to speak to if I had any other issues.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the start of the internship, I was quite busy as I had meetings with people across my team, alongside any trainings, information and speaker session (these were held throughout the internship). However, after one week, I was given my project which required a lot of time but did not involve any late nights. Once the project had ended, my schedule became a lot freer which allowed me to spend time learning about the company and meeting various employees.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During the internship, we were given a project to work on. We had approximately just over 2 weeks to work on it and had to conduct our own research and give a presentation to several executives and managing directors. We had to work independently on them and not with the other interns but had the ability to speak with our buddy, manager or any other employees. The main aim of the project was for our own personal development.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Due to COVID-19, the internship was fully virtual and thus I was working from home for the whole thing. However, everyone I spoke to was very friendly and welcoming and happy to speak to me. We also had a casual call with the whole team and a nice games session at the end of the internship. We also had several networking events organised for us where we could meet other interns outside of our department through the internship.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The entire internship was very well organised. Before our first day, we were given a calendar with our entire schedule. We were also given all the zoom details for our 1 to 1 meetings with the others for company-wide meeting later on. We did not have any issues with clashes except with the occasional zoom detail being incorrect, which was easily solved. The team also had access to our timetable so they would know when we were free.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had three main training sessions. The first was on the first day when we learnt about Morgan Stanley, what they do, and their locations, goals and objectives. The second was about financial markets and bonds. The last session was more specific to our department. We also had a development session organised for presentations, networking and company etiquette. During my first week, my buddy and manger helped me come up with 5 goals that I aimed to achieve by the end of the internship.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Due to COVID-19, my internship was fully virtual and from home, which made it much harder to network and meet other interns. As it was online, we did not have the ability to bump into someone and have 1 to 1 conversations easily. However, from the networking events organised and team exercises it helped created connections and conversation starters. If the internship was in person, I believe the social scene would have been much better.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The company had organised several networking events with other interns. We were also told about diversity networks which we could get involved with outside of work and the events they hold. We also had Wednesday wellness events each week such as choir and yoga for one hour which is a nice way to end the day. We also had the ability to take part in a giving back event which we could also continue in our own time.
