    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the work and meeting new people. I liked the different social activities that were put on. The intern competition was really fun and was an interesting challenge. I also really enjoyed the social activities that were put on by the team. It gave me a good opportunity to get to know the team better and was really fun. The work was also very interesting and I liked how it was a project that would be used.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by the team. I took part in the weekly scrum meetings which gave me an insight into how the team operates. I was also asked to give my opinion on different parts of the project that I was working on, which made me feel very valued. The team didn't treat me any different because I was an intern which was good. I was also told that my work was very good which made me feel valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given support throughout the internship. This support came from people on the team and especially from my manager. When I had problems I could ask questions on Skype or in a symphony group chat which was very useful. Also when my manager was on his holiday I was able to ask other people on the team for help. I liked how I was given time to try and fix problems on my own as well.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In the first few weeks I spent a lot of time setting up my development environment so that I could begin coding. This took a long time so then the week after I had finished that I was very busy with development. By the final week I had a lot more free time as the project had been mostly finished. I think this wouldn't have been as much of a problem if the internship wasn't virtual

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility in regards to developing my project. I was given space to work on the project on my own. I then checked in with my manager a few time every week to show the progress and record any changes that he felt I should make. My responsibilities were restricted for the production environment which made me feel more confident as I knew I could not mess up anything in production

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learned a range of skills. One of the biggest is managing my emails better because at the beginning I had too many emails to manage. Then I learned to group them properly. I also learned a lot more about git which will help me in the future with development. The internship also helped me learn about how the workplace works and how software engineering is down in a large company such as Morgan Stanley

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It is difficult to know what the atmosphere in the office would be like since the programme was online. However, the people at Morgan Stanley seemed very nice. The social activities that I took part in made me feel very included into the team. I also like how people seemed very happy to help with any problems that I had. I liked how I could ask any questions on Skype or symphony and I would get an answer straight away

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • In the beginning of the internship I had to set up the development environment which took about 3 weeks to get set up. I think this could have possibly been organised before the internship to give more time for actual development. Also at the beginning of the internship I wasn't on some of the mailing lists which resulted in me missing a few of the intern events. I think overall the internship was very well organized.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a lot of events that were organised were we listened to successful people that were a part of Morgan Stanley. This gave us the opportunity to learn from these people and develop a range of different skills such as networking. We also had training in agile which I think will be very useful later on. Overall I think that Morgan Stanley did spend a good amount of time investing in the interns .

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After the internship I received an offer to join the TAP programme which I have accepted. I am looking forward to working with the company in the future and I think the future employment prospects look very good. I think this will be a good opportunity to gain very valuable experience in a very large company such as Morgan Stanley and it will also give me the chance to work with a lot of experienced people

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was affected by the fact that the internship was virtual. However, we did try and make an effort to organise intern social events. I took part in an intern bake off which was fun. I also took part in an intern pub quiz which was a good opportunity to meet some new people. I also arranged a social event with a few other interns where we had a coffee break and discussed our progress.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • There was no cost as the internship was virtual. All the social events were on zoom. I imagine if the internship had not been virtual there would be much more social events to attend and the cost might get a lot higher. My manager mentioned that usually there would be lots of meals out in Canary wharf. I think that overall this didn't affect the internship much and I still enjoyed the limited social activities.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There was no night life as the internship was virtual.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was no activities outside work as the internship was virtual.
