    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was great to meet like-minded people from all kinds of degree disciplines and also great to meet graduates who had recently been through the system and could give such accurate advice. We had exposure right up to the seniors of the business which made me feel important as an intern rather than just a number on a roll-call! There was obviously a packed schedule, made enjoyable because banking and markets was combined so everyone did all the simulation games/training/shadowing. The social events in the evenings were also really well planned and still work-relevant so we were learning in a social environment which was excellent.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Shadowing recently hired grads made the experience feel a lot closer to home - they were about three years senior to us so what they were doing didn't exactly feel out of reach. They gave us the real jargon and were approachable - I asked just about every question I wanted to ask beforehand and more.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everyone was really approachable, made evident by their open floor plans where managers sat with interns and grads - it's a really comfortable environment to ask questions.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The scheduling was jam-packed but gave a really good flavour of the working week in banking. It was nice to be kept busy.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Being an Easter Insight scheme we weren't supposed to be given any real work, hence no comment.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The training received will help me when I take financial modules later on in my maths degree as well as for further interviews and just for my general understanding.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very pleasant, you could tell everyone was working on the desk at which they were placed because they picked it and enjoyed it.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • We were given a lot of information about where we were supposed to be and I was impressed with the way that the locations were picked so that we could see all the RBS London offices. Given that the programme was now 'front office' combining former GBM Banking and Markets in one, it was very well structured and I feel like I got a lot out of one week.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The first day entailed training by AMT (a banking training external company) and a Personal Impact trainer giving us a really holistic approach to conduct in a bank.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The final day consisted of a fast-track interview for the following summer as well as a very interesting corporate social responsibility exercise.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I've made some friends for life by taking part in the Easter Insight.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I commuted from home, but from what I understand, those who lived outside the M25 were eligible for accommodation 5 minutes walk away from Aldgate station.

  • Didn't experience the nightlife whilst working.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a CSR activity (corporate social responsibility) which was good fun and showed the firm in a different light.
