    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Capital One was a really enjoyable place to work, and as interns we were treated really well. There was always plenty of interesting work to do, and opportunitites to learn. In addition, during the course of the internship there were loads of social events that made the summer even more enjoyable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • It was amazing how well I felt welcomed by everyone at Capital One, and never felt like an outsider. All of the people in my team were always super willing to help me out with things, and tried really hard to make sure that I was included in everything that was going on within the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager gave me a lot of support during my time at Capital One, really working with me to help me achieve the things that I was interested in. Through weekly 10:10 meetings with my manager I was able to identify things to work on and my manager was really supportive in making sure that I had the time and resources that I needed to achieve them.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always felt that there was plenty of work to do, and was never left being bored having run out of things to work on. Being able to work on both an Intern Project and getting involved with the work that my team was doing also meant that the work was varied. Having said this, I never felt that there was too much work. I was never expected to stay late to finish things, and always found some time to play table football!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was very surprised at the amount of responsibility that I was given. I was actively encouraged to work on tickets from my team's project independently, and this is exactly what I did! I was super proud to have done independent work that got put into production whilst I was doing my internship!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This internship allowed me to put into practice a lot of the things that I had learnt about on my Computer Science course at university and everything that I did on a day to day basis was relevant to my degree. Some of the specific skills that I developed at Capital One, for example surrounding how to do good software testing, have proved very useful to me whilst working on my final year project.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I worked in the London office which is much smaller than the Nottingham head office, however it has great atmosphere. There's plenty of spots to work away from your desk, kitchens with free cereal and fizzy drinks, a pool table, table football, and a rooftop bar! There was almost always people at the games area, making sure to keep that work/fun balance in check!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship programme was really well organised, from the very beginning where there was a social event on the Sunday night to help us get to know each other, to the various training sessions and of course the intern fun day where all of us went to Alton Towers for the day.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lots of training which was great as it showed that the company cared about us and helping us to develop. In addition to the formal training days, each intern had a mentor who is another member of their team that is always happy to answer any questions on a day to day basis about your work and help you out if you need it!

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    National Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Seems to be lots of opportunities for growth and they are in general a really good company to work for. A really good work/life balance, loads of genuinely nice people who want to help you to succeed, and interesting and challenging work to do make Capital One a really appealing place to work after Uni.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All of the interns and grads were really close and have become good friends. It was rare that there would be a week where we wouldn't go out for some drinks after work etc. Also there was lots of organised social events, both for interns and for the company as a whole, such as the summer festival.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Working in Central London so prices of everything high as you would expect, but the pay is also very reasonable so you don't end up struggling to be able to socialise etc. Nottingham is a bit cheaper so always nice to go on a trip up to the other office now and again!!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The London office is at Old Street, near Shoreditch, so there are LOADS of pubs and bars within walking distance for socialising after work. There is also a bar on the roof of the office which is a nice place to get a drink after work if you don't feel like venturing too far!

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Capital One do a lot of work for charities and the local community. As a result there's quite a lot of opportunities to get involved with things outside of your day to day work. As an example, there was the 5 peaks challenge that some of the interns took part in alongside some of the existing graduates to raise money for charity.
