    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the six week internship! Initially I was a little bit nervous, due to the fact that I have no prior knowledge of accountancy, but the majority of people are so lovely and patient and willing to explain everything to you. It's a very flexible working environment, with a wonderful company culture and you definitely feel as though you are part of the team.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From day one I was definitely made to feel part of the team, and that the work I was doing was making a positive impact. I was also provided with positive and encouraging feedback, which was really heartening to read. They would also invite me to eat lunch with them etc. which was really nice.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support from the firm has been amazing! From the very beginning it was emphasised that no question is a silly question, and we were encouraged to ask as many questions as we needed. The majority of the senior associates that I worked with were extremely patient, despite being so busy, and my career coach and buddy were both incredibly supportive throughout my internship.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Quite busy, but that was good because it meant I was never bored or sat around waiting to be given tasks. I never found myself with nothing to do, and I worked diligently from 8.30 - 5.30/6 every day. On client site we were busier than if we were in the office, which meant some days we worked a bit longer.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility. During my first week I was immediately on client site, which I thought was a good thing because it means you can learn things straight away. Then I was at a different client site for two weeks down in Leicester, and it was only me and one Senior Associate on the audit. This meant that I was expected to complete many of the tasks on my own, with guidance of course, and liaise with the client independently.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The accountancy skills and knowledge that I have gained will not directly relate to my degree, since I study modern languages and cultures at university, but I have definitely been able to improve on many soft skills, such as time management, communication and teamwork. However, the accountancy knowledge that I have gained over the six weeks will be invaluable next september in the full-time role.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was only in the office for the last week and a half, because I was mostly out on client site, but the general atmosphere is really good and positive. It's a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and there are still casual conversations floating around, despite how busy everyone is.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I thought the overall internship was very well organised, especially our first week. All the interns from across the country gathered in Windsor for training and it was so much fun. I loved meeting other interns and getting to know them, as well as participating in team building exercises and attending partner formal dinners in the evening.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested in us from day one, as we participated in 3 days of accountancy workshops, focused on specific line of services, and definitely learnt a lot during this time. However, most of my personal training and development came from working with the clients and the audit teams and being hands-on with the job.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Working from home

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. The majority of interns are offered an offer at the end of the internship, provided that you don't mess up or perform horribly. I'm not sure how many of the interns actually accept the offer though.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Weekly social events were organised on a Fri evening. During my internship there was also a sports day where the entire assurance department participated in sports such as football and rounders, but also egg and spoon race and tug of war. This brought the entire office together and provided opportunities to meet people outside of a business environment.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • N/A. I lived at home and commuted into the office every day, and for the majority of my internship I was down south on client site. However, if you are on client site, your hotel accommodation is reimbursed and you are allowed to spend up to £30 for dinner, which will also be reimbursed.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I worked in the Leeds office which has good nightlife. However, I was mostly on client site and didn't really have the opportunity to experience this.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • yes, there were social events organised outside of work. they were also relaxed and in informal settings and it was nice to talk to colleagues outside of work.
