    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • i enjoyed working for Costain in the Summer of last year, working in the Oil & Gas sector. Became more knowledgeable on Quantity Surveying that helped me with my second year at university. Also played football on Wednesdays with a lot of people from the site, which was a good way to get to know everyone on the team.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was assigned a good amount of work where I was able to see my input in helping out on the project. I was also invited to all work related sociable events and could attend meetings with the more senior roles in the project.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was always shown how to do the work I was set before I got underway on the tasks, could also easily ask anyone sat around me for help or guidance on how to do the task correctly if I was unsure.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Not so busy that I was under stress but busy enough that I was intrigued with the project and wanting to get more involved. Never got bored, but also never felt out of depth as could ask for guidance on the tasks.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A reasonable amount that I was happy with, as I was there for my summer placement (4 Months) I was given an appropriate work load to help me learn about the project and about what I would be doing in my role as a Quantity Surveyor.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not only did the work that I was doing help me have a better understanding of the degree, but my line manager helped massively on understanding different forms of contracts and insurances by talking to me in a meeting room running through examples and his past presentations.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Good place to work as had a good laugh with everyone whilst everyone was still focused on their work, was happy to go work every day wasn't a struggle at all.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • was well organised as had objectives I was set to achieve at the start of the placement and a mid placement review to see how I was getting on achieving them and one at the end to make sure that I reached my objectives and enjoyed my placement with Costain.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Had multiple one to one sessions with my line manager, he would go through different forms of contracts that are used with the subcontractors and insurances that were needed on the project which helped me further in my second year at university as my placement was after my first year.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • very appealing, currently on my year in industry placement with Costain working on a different project (doing a sandwich degree) to where I was working last summer, Costain look to improve your expertise and give you relevant experience to what you want to do. After I have my degree I will then be looking to join the Costain Graduate Scheme.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • there wasn't any other placement students on the project with me but didn't feel singled out in any way, was still invited to all the work events and sports with everyone else on the project, such as playing football every Wednesday with some, and a charity golf day.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Was not bad at all, Costain also provides travel/accommodation allowance to help with this, I was living quite local to my project and was only a 50 minute drive to get there but my fuel expenses were covered.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As lived locally I have heard it is quite good over there, but haven't been out there before as was commuting to and from work from my parents home.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Was invited to all events that were outside of work such as a charity golf day that they had organised.
