Insight Day Review

I thought that the insight was a somewhat enjoyable experience because of the way that the staff members ran the day; providing a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for the duration of my stay with BP. There were enough activities and discussions over a range of events to ensure continued interest.

There was definitely a sense that I was valued during my time with BP at the insight day. This was partly down to there being a real effort to make all the events ran as smoothly as possible and to ensure that all our needs were always met in totality.

It was clear throughout the insight day that the primary purpose was to provide guidance and support for applications in the future, which I felt was very useful. The range of activities over the course of the day meant that support and guidance were available in a number of formats.

The skills I developed are not directly relevant to my degree as they focussed on interview technique, but some of the broader aspects of the day have been useful in this context, for example in terms of presentation and interpersonal skills. In interviews since the day the skills have been very useful.

There was a clear structure throughout the course of the insight day, with a strong schedule of activities in set time periods. I felt that this was very useful as some activities had the possibility of over running but the company staff were very aware of this and ensured a smooth running of the day.

I felt that the general atmosphere was relatively relaxed, but also with a clear focus on the task at hand, namely providing support and insight into BP and their application process. Certainly all the staff members were very friendly and more than happy to assist and provide support during the day.

As the purpose of the insight day was to provide us with information and scenarios that we would find useful for our personal development, it was clear that a significant amount of effort had been put in to ensure that this remit was fulfilled. The interview scenarios in particular were very useful.

During the insight day there were a number of BP employees brought in precisely for the purpose of explaining what their daily roles entail. This was very useful for understanding what it would be like to work for the company, especially as there were employees from a broad spectrum of areas present.

I found the day very useful for gaining an understanding of the culture at BP. From our arrival it was evident that we were to adhere to the standards expected by regular BP employees in terms of safety. In particular the insistence of holding handrails when on staircases made the culture clear.

I would absolutely recommend this insight to a friend if they were interested not only in understanding the culture at a large firm but also how to best approach job applications and interview scenarios. I certainly feel that the insight day has been very useful for me in these arenas.
