The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. It was a good way to see what I could be interested in doing in my later life and it gave me really good insight into the business world. Whilst on the job the days went very quickly and I loved the teamwork and social side of it.
I really felt like the work I was doing was making a difference. There were times when I was doing work that I felt was above my knowledge level and because of that I felt like useful. Moreover, on one client it was nearing the final meeting so the work I was doing was irreplaceable.
The supervisors/ leaders/ coaches/ 'in-charges' I had the pleasure of working with gave me the perfect amount of support. They were always there when I needed a helping hand, but also gave me the appropriate distance to allow me to challenge myself and develop useful skills. The internship would have been challenging without their help.
I was definitely more busy than I was expecting. I would say I had to work through my lunch on at least 5 occasions and had to stay later by a similar amount. These were however the time I set myself to do the work I had been given, so if I had worked more efficiently this could have been reduced.
I was given a good level of responsibility and it really helped me develop my leadership skills. Most notable of these was when I had the opportunity to coach a business insight week junior. I was able to also get some positive upward feedback from him which helped me develop my portfolio.
I study Chemistry at university, so unfortunately the majority of the work I did on the internship will not help me in my university life. However, there are definitely life skills that I learnt that will benefit my future career. Most notable of these was my leadership and relationship building skills
The Company
The work placement was very well organised and I always knew what I was supposed to be doing. Using the online system I was able to see which clients I was booked to. Moreover, the 'in charge' on the job would always email me the friday before to let me know what I was doing in the following week.
The employment prospects with the company are great. It is the type of job which is renowned around the world, and will definitely open up doors for me in the future. This internship is definitely something I am going to consider putting on my CV for most job applications to come.
The Culture
The social scene with the peers around my age and in the year above was great. On at least 3 occasions there were opportunities to socialise after work. Moreover, on the job there was a great social side. Additionally, conversation was flowing whilst we worked, and during lunch there was a really nice and friendly atmosphere.
The nightlife in the area I worked was really good. There was a nice selection of pubs and clubs which we were able to go to. I did however feel like after my 6 weeks there would be limited places I had not been to before. I am sure however, I could have ventured further a field.
