    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was good. The people I worked with in the team in the office were all very nice, made the whole experience enjoyable. The work itself was hit and miss as there was not always interesting work available for me to do but every job at least provided a good learning opportunity.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were all very nice. They were all talkative and treated me as a part of the team. Whenever there were meetings or anything to attend they made sure I was invited and knew were to go. Also they ensured that I understood my tasks and spent time explaining anything I didn't understand.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My career coach / people manager also had a lot of other responsibilities and commitments during my internship and so he was not always available for a meeting in person during working hours, however he would always reply quickly over email or instant messaging, working hard to answer any questions I had. He also spent a lot of time helping me get hold of the right people if I needed to take my questions to someone else.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The teams we were assigned to was seemingly random, and so it was not always ensured that there would be work available for someone at an intern level could do. If there was not enough work to do on our assigned client it was our responsibility to find more work for ourselves which was not always possible.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • When the work was available, I was given a decent amount of responsibility as I would be given a job and left alone to do it like any other employee. However it was not too much and I didn't feel out of my depth at all, so it was a nice balance.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not so much in my degree studies as this internship is quite different to my degree. However I learned a lot about business and finance which will be widely applicable to jobs beyond my degree. I also learned a lot of excel skills and became more proficient with data analysis using Excel which is also widely applicable in careers.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Excellent. Everyone was very nice and welcoming. Even if there was work to be done people would be making fun conversation making a very casual and fun environment. People brought in communal snacks for everyone and there was a good sense of camaraderie and a close team. People were all very nice.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The clients and teams we were assigned were seemingly random, and there was not always a decent amount of work to do. As a result the work was not always very interesting and mentally stimulating, if it were organised better we could always get work that was more relevant and interesting.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The first week was entirely training about business in general and accounting. People in the group took time to teach me things relevant to the client and relevant to the work that I was doing which taught me a nice range of skills and I developed my professional and personal skills well.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very. There are a lot of offices and business units with PwC and after the internship you can apply to move to another one if you do want to change to something that you think you will be more suited to. And a lot of interns get offered a job at the end which is good.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • At my office there were 5 interns in total. We all ate together every day and went out for drinks after work when we could. Furthermore our tutor and people manager organised things for us to do together which helped us to get to know each other well at the start of the internship.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Reading is quite expensive, but it is not too bad. Travelling into and out of reading is not too expensive if you commute however doing it everyday the price does add up. There are cheap bars but the PwC in Reading is near the train station which makes near bars quite expensive as there is a large commuter scene.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I did not live in the city that I did my internship in so I do not know. However the bars after work were lively enough to make it fun however not so packed that is was uncomfortably full. The other interns would organise nights out often and said that they were fun.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • No opportunities really presented themselves around Reading however working full time it was difficult to find the time. There is a gym in the city so that is convenient. The train station is also close so if you wanted to do something further afield that was also not too difficult.
