    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This placement was not entirely enjoyable. We were met by criticisms and bullying by staff members, rude customers (which is to be expected when working in customer service/retail) but the main downfall that ultimately made my time there incredibly unpleasant was the staff members themselves, in particular certain members of the Human reseources Department.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues valued each other according to their own personal, individual needs that day. To be completely honest the people that worked alongside me were short tempered and susceptible to great mood swings and belittlement but this was sadly, to be expected due to the treatment they endured from higher up staff members.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was no support at all given to myself or my colleagues from the managers and other higher up staff members, they belittled, mocked, bullied and emotionally blackmailed all of us there who were working the front lines, breaking our backs and spirits to get out jobs done the best we could.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The shop itself was horrendously busy and not just on a special holiday such as Christmas or new year but every single day of the week from opening at 6am to closing at 10.30 pm. Only two staff members were placed on each shift and forced to completed all tasks.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • For my age, 17 and my experience I was given a horrendous and worrying amount of responsibility. With minimal to little or no training I was forced to maintain petroleum and diesel pumps, regulate the Liquified Petroleum Gas levels, handle all the finances, ensure that security was enforced etc. It was hard.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Morrisons if not little helped but even harmed my reputation and outlook for future job prospects as it gave me the impression that I was worthless and that every job I took on would break my spirit so harshly as Morrisons themselves did. I suffered a long period of unemployment for mental recovery.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere behind the toll was that of a rushed, painful one. Myself and my designated colleague for that day found ourselves beside ourselves with worry and panic and both physical and mental pains. We could not bring ourselves to complete all the tasks but we’re forced to or face scrutiny and abuse from our managers.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • We were not given our full holiday entitlement, we were not given out full break entitlements on our shifts, we were lied to, promised help and nothing occurred, our chosen holiday dates were taken away without warning or compromise, we were forced to work shifts with less than 12 hours notice.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Morrisons takes their new recruits out from the tills for ten minutes, proceeds to sit them in front of computer screens and gets them to complete an online video turioti trainings video. This training video was supposed to prepare us for fires, different sorts of explosions but instead he managrrs told us the answers and ushered us off back to work.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Morrisons don’t even employ managers from the company within, instead they throw out the managers that have been there for 30+ years and employ new recruits straight out of university. They don’t care about their current employees and so give them no way to progress or advance further as we are seen as nothing but lives stock.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • No. There were sometimes parties for certain birthdays but only the managers were invited, the Christmas parties were not advertised in the company building and so were available for only the selected and regular few. The social scene is anything but thriving and is in fact arguably a scene whatsoever

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Eccles average rent privately is £500+ for a small flat with one bedroom, the shops are cheap when you shop at home and bargain but otherwise the prices charged in store at Morrisons are arguably the most hilarious thing to come out of the company despite its current Human Resources representatives.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is one Wetherspoons pub which is filled with old men who constantly gasp, harass and scare the young girls who finish work and go to the bus stop facing the pub after work. The nightlife in Eccles is great if you prefer talking about snooker and sitting in a smoke filled room with men.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Morrison offered no opportunities outside of work and almost acted as their employees did not exist outside of their own designated working hours. Nobody is friends outside of work, nobody knows one another personally and each person keeps to themselves in fear that they might get into some sort of confrontation.
