    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The ideal place to be for anyone who wants to get valuable+ useful chemical engineering work experience. Also, Company culture is excellent. The people are friendly, the work is challenging and the scope is large. The company encourages interns to learn about other roles for career exposure , which is priceless.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very much so. I was given real responsibilities that affected team workflow, the tasks encouraged me to perform well and I received recognition for doing so. The work I produced went on to be used by other employees are was part of important documentation. My efforts were commended on many different occasions.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support is available in the form of endorsements of my own ideas at all times or if I need a kick-start , during a scheduled meeting. There is also support in career planning, which involves building a network of people in other parts of the business and also help for out-of-work concerns.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would get given a few tasks at once , they would run for different periods of time. My workload would lighten as I finished each task until I got another set of tasks. I always had something to do and always had enough time to do every single task well.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The responsibilities I was given were appropriate from my industry knowledge level but still very beneficial. For example, work that involved minor equipment investigation that would have required a senior engineer to investigate but I took as a task instead. This means I took fully responsibility for smaller scale tasks where the end result could be checked.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • More useful to a career in process engineering than a degree in chemical engineering. The experience is very useful for a process engineer and will likely be useful for all tasks that require time management and task juggling. Most importantly though , is a solid building of soft skills which are used everywhere.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • General atmosphere was hard working but understanding also. Overall friendly. There is a constant stream of work which keeps people busy. Never heard anyone complain about being overworked or a poor work-life balance. As such people were happy and not stressed making interaction free from tension when it came to work delegation.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Well organised, software access could be made more easily accessible to prevent initial delays but overall understandable. Pre-start preparations could be accelerated to avoid clashing with exam time however it worked out for most interns fine. As for work, the supervisors are required by HR to fill in a task list which means there is work for interns to be involved in from day one.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • BP is an excellent company for employee investment. I was supported to discover different parts of the business. I was invited to team building exercises as well as training for presentation and learning styles. Senior members are happy to spend time discussing career paths and options. Everyone is willing to offer time for my benefit.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • BP makes it clear that many interns go on to become full time employees on their graduate scheme. The vacancies are often related if not the same as the internship. For those who do not have an opportunity to pursue the same role at graduate level, HR will look for appropriate vacancies elsewhere within the company.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • 4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The younger employees at work organise sports activities which interns are invited to. The interns are included in the grad social events which is a good opportunity to network. There are also clubs and gyms that have student discounts. Most of the shopping areas (including services) close at 6 which can be frustrating
