The Role
I have enjoyed my internship. I have learnt a lot. I did not expect to learn as much as I have. I have been included in my whole team and everyone has been very friendly. Furthermore. I have been given my opportunities like the store placement and the visits. Everything has been really valuable to me.
I was valued by my colleagues. However, I do feel that it would have been better if everyone in the office or at least the team knew that I was joining them for 10weeks. Getting to know my team was hard as everyone was busy. So I would say that I was valued by the people who knew that I would be there as part of the team for the 10 weeks, which was not that many people.
I was given a huge amount of support. My line manager was there was me at all time. So was my buddy and the everyone from the internship organisers. My line managers has helped me and took out so much of his time to help me.
I was quite busy. If I was not working on the project then the team had given me an individual project to work on. I was also looking at courses on pluralsight and having meetings with different people in the tech department but also all over Tesco.
Gradually through the internship I was given more and more responsibilities. It was a nice to have the learning curve and slowly more and more responsibilities to deal with. I think it was a good balanced. And even when I had responsibilities if I felt uncomfortable my colleagues were always there to help me.
The skills: in the technology department but also leadership and working in a team are going to be very valuable to me. All the skills will help me during my studies but also during my career in the future. I have learnt a lot and some of my friends are already coming up to me to ask for advice and help using the particular technology I was working with.
The Company
The general atmosphere was very nice. Everyone was very friendly. My whole team was happy to work on what they were and everyone was passionate about the technologies they were using. Furthermore, everyone in the team was eager to learn more about the technologies others were using and other new innovations in the industry. However, everyone was working together as colleagues not really knowing the people in person, few social activities would have made the atmosphere even better.
I was fairly organised. There were w few visits and a store placement. They were all really goo opportunities. However, some of the visits and other common plans were moving and changing and canceled. My internship did not quite look like the plan we were given during the first week. Which I understand however a little more organisation would have been good. Also not everyone in my team know I was coming and therefore I did not have permission to a few softwares that I needed to use as they did not know I was coming or just did not set it up for me. And those software set up required a lot of time and pushing the right people which my line manager helped me a lot with. On the work side, my line manager was really good for finding me things to do.
The company did invest a lot of time in me. A lot of people helped me and had a chat with me about what they do in their day to day which was extremely helpful. I was able to talk to a lot of people and learn from them. Other than that we had a store placement which was amazing and a few visits. There was not many social activities.
Flexi Time
Working from home
I have loved my time at Tesco. The experience has been overall really amazing and I have learnt so much. The people I have spent my time here have been very helpful and lovely to work with. Highly skilled and friendly. The graduate position looks very attractive with the possibility to try out different things from front end to back end and innovations.
The Culture
From my perspective there was a lack of social interaction between the other interns and my colleagues. Between me and my colleagues we did have lunch together and we spent some time talking about other than work. However, that was coming from us not the company. Not many events were organised to be social. With the other interns not many events were organised either and not many wanted to organise something by ourselves.
I was working in Clerkenwell which was a really nice area to socialise. The cost was high but there were many different things to do.
There is a really good opportunity for nightlife in Clerkenwell.
Not really. The only opportunities I had were ones that I or other friends and colleagues organised by themselves.
