The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my time at Tesco on the internship. Was really professionally run and I was given real work to do throughout my time. Had a really fun team to work with who were very supportive. The project that I was assigned was really interesting and I could see how it would have a real impact on the company.
Felt extremely valued by my colleagues. No question I asked felt like a stupid one to ask. Having one grad in my team and another sitting close by was extremely helpful in terms of getting up to speed on the various systems and any general problems I had, as they had been through something similar very recently.
Had regular catch ups with my manager to check on how my project was coming along. During these my manager would be able to provide a different view on the work and give me another way to think about it. Also had other people in my team who were willing to help when my manager wasn't there.
Very rarely did I have nothing to do. Towards the end as my project was coming to a close, I asked another member in the team if there was any work they wanted me to get involved/help out with. So I then had another project to be getting on with.
I was in complete control of my project. People around me gave me new ideas and pointers when I asked for it. I branched out around the business by my own accord to reach out to people who could have an input into my work. There was no one at any point telling me what to do.
Not so much in my degree studies but definitely after that in my working life. I feel like I have massively progressed with excel and am very close to where someone working in finance needs to be. I have also learnt how to code in SQL because of the training I did with one of the grads.
The Company
Very positive atmosphere. Always people having a laugh and never silent. For me it was the perfect mix of working and socialising. Also the open desk plan really makes the company seem unhierarchical.
Very organised and professionally done. The two days at the beginning of the internship to introduce you to the company and get to know the other interns was very valuable.
I had many 1-2-1s with a grad in my team who taught me how to use SQL/Excel. Tesco also set up various masterclasses in excel, networking etc to help us during our time and also help us for the future. I was given a lot of time to talk with people around the company so that I could network and move forward with my project.

Very appealing! They have explained the process with us post internship about moving onto the grad scheme. For me, I am very likely to take the job if offered it because I resonate with the Tesco way of working and have enjoyed it more than previous work experience that I have done.
The Culture
I kind of neither agree nor disagree. I was on holiday when the big social event was so that makes it hard for me to comment on. There is also an event right at the end which we haven't yet had! For me this internship was more about getting my head down and working, and socialising at the weekends with my friends from home.
I lived at home during the internship because I live fairly close to the office so can't really comment on that aspect of the question. In terms of socialising, it isn't the cheapest place in the UK, but nothing compared to London. However I have heard form other interns that the cost of their accommodation was fairly reasonable
Haven't ever been out in Welwyn Garden City. I go out at home (St Albans) which I would say is okay. Its not great but you always love your local clubs/pubs no matter how good they are! Can also get into London fairly easily so that is always an option. About 45 mins on the train form Welwyn and 20 mins from St Albans.
Yes there were plenty. Firstly as part of the internship programme there is a charity challenge which you do in groups of 6/7. The challenge is to raise as much money as you can in the 10 weeks. I also got involved in a netball tournament within finance and 5-aside football at lunchtimes.
