    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Initially I found it difficult to balance both working full time and university work. However, once I got into the swing of things it was much easier, although still tiring!

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All my colleagues were extremely friendly and were always willing to help if you had a question or were stuck with anything. They were very appreciative of the work done by all the placement students and good work was rewarded with cash bonuses!

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • In my department weekly meetings were held between myself, my supervisor and my manager and we'd discuss the work I'd been doing that week and any issues I'd encountered.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of the work, somedays I wouldn't have much to do if I was waiting for reactions to go to completion etc. However, most of the time I was incredibly busy and working on several different synthetic routes at once.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Because the group I was part of was fairly small I was given quite a large amount of responsibility as I performed most of the practical chemistry for the group. I was responsible for managing my time effectively and for ensuring I had the correct product from the reaction. I was also given responsibilities such as organising to send compound to colleagues in Shanghai.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The practical experience I've gained from working in the lab at GSK for a year is invaluable. It has helped me a lot with my fourth year MChem project and is also extremely valued by potential employers.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Generally the office was quite quiet as everyone was either busy in the lab or getting on with work. However, the whole office went for a tea break every day together which allowed everyone to relax.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Everything was really well organised because the company has been offering placements for a long time.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • All placement students got to attend the same training events as full time staff. For example, chemists underwent training on LCMS, 2D NMR and lots of safety training. There were also countless seminars on drug discovery for everyone to attend which really widened and increased my knowledge of the industry.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Because of an increase in outsourcing there aren't really any jobs for graduate chemists within GSK. I'm sure the employment prospects would be much better if you have a PhD.

    1/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes - the people who worked in the chemistry department regularly had house parties/went on nights out/went out for meals together.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Rent was fairly expensive so I would advise a house share wherever possible.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • People enjoyed themselves which I suppose is all you can ask for on a night out! If you want a wider selection of bars and clubs you're probably better off going into London.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I'm sure there are if you actually have time! All my time was taken up working, going to the gym and doing university work.

    3/5
