    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • the internship was very well organised, the early career team and all other teams are very supportive. Great opportunities available and had the chance to show your own strength and was also encouraged to learn new things all the time. And a summer in Edinburgh is always nice, especially with great people.


  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Always had great support from all team members, especially line manager and buddy. People are always willing to spend some time with you to explain their roles or to help you with what you need. Colleagues are always there to hear your ideas and giving feedback which is great help in all projects.


  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Had wonderful support throughout the internship from line managers and buddy. My manager was on annul leave for two week during my internship but asked another manager to cover this role while she was away. Both of them supported me to a great extent, in terms of project and working with others, as well as personal issues. Buddies were always attentive and helped to talk through problems weekly.


  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varies from time to time. all my projects seemed to be due at roughly the same time. although had 8 weeks to develop them, but they kind of peaked all together in the middle stage. But once you adapt into the working lifestyle, it's not hard to balance everything. I was kept quite busy, never too bored.


  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • it varies between the type of internship you apply for and which team you get allocated to. My wasn't able to get involved in their daily jobs, but was working on the projects and objectives the manager and early career team set for us. which were wonderful opportunities to learn and develop new areas of knowledge. and most of the projects is really relevant to what the bank is focusing on at the moment.


  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was actually managed to use many framework and skills I learned in uni (a business degree) into the projects I've worked on. I have improved a lot in terms of time management, working with others and actively reaching out for support. as well as different angles to approach research/projects. which will all be helpful in any other future studies and careers.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great atmosphere in the office. everyone was so friendly and chatty. People were kind of going away for annul leaves from the team due to the season. But whoever was there was always fun to be around. Always chilled and relaxed. but I guess it does depend on the team and the nature of their roles.


  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised with a set timeline prior to the start of the internship letting you know what will be happening and when. Many learning sessions were also available to interns specifically and also some team specific ones. Projects were also set by the team and the bank on topics they thought would be useful. Induction days were also great, but systems took about 2 weeks to be fully functional.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • made great friends from the internship and possibly will be life long. because there were about 80 of us in Edinburgh, it was never too hard to find someone to do something together. the internship itself and some graduates also organised a few social events which were always great fun.


  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Rent during august and just summer in general in Edinburgh can be quite bad. It can cost somewhat above average sometimes for food and drinks, but there's always cheap options available. Travelling isn't bad at all. Ridecard can be used to tram and buses. Canteen is a little expensive tho.
